What Barbara Boxer Just Said!

Watching my local news I just heard Boxer say she spoke with Davis today and Bustamonte and she said that they're coming close to an agreement which will be announced within the next few days. Me thinks Davis is being forced out, so Bustamonte will be able to run as the current Governor. Ya think?

Couldn't Davis just resign now (or anytime before the re-call election)? Then the Democratic Lt. Governor would take over.
To: Hildy
Without a doubt.

No. Too late for that. Once the recall is certified it must go on.

As I understand it, Bustamante would only be Governor until the recall election if that happened. Still, If Davis resigns, the Dems will work to portray the election as a recall of Bustamante, not of Davis. This could work to their advantage.

If Governor Davis resigns, Bustamente would be Gorvenor only until the recall election, which takes place anyway.
See,s the guys who wrote the 1911 election law foresaw just such an eventuality.

You think they're trying to pull a Lautenberg?
To: afuturegovernor
Yes he can, but........ The recall still goes on. The Lt. Gov. can then become Gov for real if the recall fails or if he wins the polling as the replacement. I think a lot of steam would go away if the Lt. Gov. becomes govenor so maybe it's a way for the dems. to neutralize the opposition and retain power. Whoever gets it, gets a real big mess and better be prepared to only be a caretaker until the next regular election.

That's not what it sounded like. The fact that she mentioned those two names was like an outright admission, in my opinion. If they believe, as do most, that Davis is toast, then this is really the smartest thing to do. Bustamonte gets alot of publicity, appealing to the minority vote who might not know exactly who he is. It's a Hail Mary.

Can you tell me if the whole cabinet goes also? Eight weeks is kind of tight to put together a whole team of people. Thanks.

This is a joke, right?

Yes. Getting Davis out of the picture would be smart. Bustamante is a cipher and unknown over most of the State, nobody is mad at him yet.
He is more likely to make it through the recall than Davis.
It is going to be difficult to get Davis to quit though.

If the entire party leadership, McAwful, Clinton, Boxer and Feinstein tell him to do it...he's gonna do it.

I don't live in California, so I could be wrong.
My impression is that Davis is a gutter fighter.
I don't see him taking the fall.
