Hate to be a spoil-sport but don't you think a concerned individual couldn't have given the dog a lift to the vet and left him there for the place to open?

I sure hope so, because if my Boxer figures out how to do this she will be in for every little thing, and I've paid those people enough money! :)

Ah. I was going to say that the human race cannot afford to let this dog breed, but you've cleared it up, I think. Whew.

This'd be too much cognitive capacity in a mutt for my comfort!

I have my suspicians that old poochie went to see his girlfriend...the one that "woofed" at him in her sexiest woof-woof the last time he visited the vet. The old "pity me" routine.

My lab mix would have taken my truck and drove to the vet.

A dog I used to drive to a nearby park for walkies didn't take long to find it on his own. The six pound Yorkie would run off down a busy street and take himself to the park. I wouldn't have known if a friend didn't live across from the park entrance and called me when it happened. I don't know how he figured that out; he'd always been in a car to get there, but he did.

My dog escaped my yard one day, then crossed 4 lanes of traffic on his way to Petsmart. The motion detection doors opened for him, he went inside and started 'shopping'.

They have more sense of direction in a car than the average human.

NoW that is a smart dog!

A friend had a dog that loved to roam far a wide. When the dog got older it would get tired out on the trail it learned that if it limped along the side of the road someone would eventually pick him up, read his tag and take him home. It became a serious habit with the pooch yet he never had a bad experience taking all those rides with strangers.

Next you'll be trying to tell us that Buddy "ACCIDENTLY" knocked X42 on his rump. Ha!

"... a concerned individual couldn't have given the dog a lift ..."

c'mon, dogs don't have thumbs and therefore can't hitch-hike.

"They have more sense of direction in a car than the average human."

Obviously, the sense of direction fades with age as evidenced by all the dashboard compasses which can be found in FL.
Most dogs are much more attentive when in a car than the human driving said car.

This dog has more common sense than most (well, actually ALL) of the people I saw on the news yesterday.

Even asleep in car a dog can follow the scents of surroundings and reverse them to get back home. Humans would have to live in a bubble if our sense of smell was even a 10th of a dog's.

That's funny...reminds me of people I have seen in grocery stores "grazing" as I call it, sampling a little here and a little there on their way through the store...

Keep worrying....

...I'll be donating my thumbs to the
Humane Society upon my death.

My brain?
Maybe some lucky cat.

I had my cat follow me to the grocery store one day (walking distance). I had no idea until I came outside and she was there to greet me. She was smart enough to know that she wasn't allowed in the store ;-)
