Pro-Lifers "Welcome" Hillary Clinton to San Diego

About 15 pro-lifers with the California Life Coalition picketed Hillary Clinton at a book signing event at a swank La Jolla (San Diego) bookstore on Monday, August 4, 2003. Clinton fans began lining up the night before for their opportunity to purchase Clinton's book, Living History. By the time pro-lifers arrived, the crowed had swelled to over 300 and quickly surpassed 1,000 by mid-morning.

Pro-lifers had no sooner gotten across the street, lined with satellite trucks, before being surrounded by media.

Within moments of displaying large graphic signs of aborted babies in the first trimester, Clinton supporters surrounded the pro-lifers and began shoving and covering their signs. Suddenly, one man violently kicked one of the signs, shattering the foam insulation board to which it was mounted and putting a hole in the middle of the vinyl photograph. Pro-lifers Sylvia Sullivan and Rayna Sullenger were slightly injured in the assault. Police were called and the attacker, Andrew Vergowuen, was detained. In lieu of charges, the Christians accepted an apology from Vergowuen and his promise to pay for the destroyed sign. This decision was made in the interest of police cooperation.

However, moments later, pro-lifer Joe Manzo of Hisperia, was attacked and spit upon by a woman who disagreed with his views. Manzo immediately placed her under citizen's arrest to prevent others in the crowd from thinking that they could act agressively against the Christians without consequences. Within minutes of that attack, an angry woman dumped a drink down the back of pro-lifer Frank Dawson but ran away before she could be detained.

Cheryl Sullenger, director of the California Life Coalition which organized the prolife outreach, met with police concerning the violence against the peaceful pro-lifers then summoned the police supervisor, who called in more officers to calm the unruly crowd. Although notified ahead of time about the Clinton appearance and the pro-life protest, police expressed surprise at the size and behavior of the crowd. "We were not ready for this," remarked one officer.

"These Clinton supporters have demonstrated with their actions the lawlessness of their world views. If support for abortion, homosexuality, and other criminal acts against the Creator can be held in respect, then violent, criminal reaction to those who disagree can only be expected," said Sullenger.

Crowds of people snaked around the corner and down four city blocks, each awaiting in turn for a brief moment with the former first lady, now New York Senator. Pro-lifers preached against abortion, debated, and bore witness of the horrific sin of abortion and the shame it brings on those who support it. Many of the Christians gave interviews to the throngs of media covering Clinton's rare San Diego appearance and were featured on every local television station.

"Everyone on the street and most people in the community were aware of the bold pro-life testimony today," said Sullenger. "It was well worth the loss of a sign and a few bumps and bruises."

Now, 25 years later, I am ashamed to be a Democrat. More than that, I have come to fear my own party. Hatred and corruption - the roots of fascism - are on the march in America as they have never been before, and leading this march is the Democratic Party. Increasingly, mainstream Democrats are uncomfortable with what we see in our party. We may not have a real name for it, but we know it is dangerous. A brief look at the history of Hillary Clinton will confirm what columnist Camille Paglia said in a recent article in Women’s Quarterly:

"That woman should not be anywhere near our government . . . That woman is an authoritarian who should be kept out of government. She’s a tyrant who thinks she knows what’s best for the people. She’s Orwellian in her attitude toward the rest of humanity." One should not, and need not, judge her by her husband’s actions— she is a corrupt radical in her own right. New Page 1

Horrible, but not surprising Dim behavior. We see the same anger when we have pro 2A rallies or rallies against illegal immigration. The left always gets violent and rude.

The police never have problems with us....only the liberal protestors....they have no idea how to behave in a respectful manner.

To show his support for women's rights, I suppose?

Imagine the media outrage if pro-lifers had treated pro-aborts that way. It would have been front-page news for weeks.

I was there. There was a lot of screaming and hollering. I just think you will never change minds with these kinds of demonstrations.

Notice a resemblance between leftists' idea of peaceful protests and the Religion of Peace? violent disregard for other viewpoints.

An academic debate in a far away rain forest would have precluded The Final Solution?

No it wasn't newsworthy - and the FReepers were across the street - but on the corner encountering all the people who were leaving after having their book signed. Hateful people - spewing filthy stuff. However, I believe Hillary's comment on Jay Leno's show was "the usual protestors across the street".

There was no mention of the crowd of pro-lifers.

Was any of this captured on tape? We need to be "armed" with video equipment at events like this.

Ouch. I'm glad it didn't spill over into your FReep. The left's love of abortion eclipses even thier love for the "Lying Leech from Little Rock".

This controlled melee was why we stayed across the street - and the cameras were focused on the bookstore where all the possible volitility was occuring. There were probably 5-7 SD police watching over the bookstore side of the street. However, we had 3 Secret Service guys and a SD plainclothes guy watching over us on our side of the street. I think they were concerned about it spilling over onto us. We only had the verbal stuff which I already told you about.

We told the SS and SD people thank you for the great job they do - even if Hitlery doesn't appreciate them. They just smiled! It was so cute.
