Situation Ethics?
Or Is the Woman Just Plain Nuts?

Now I think I have heard everything! This letter is not specifically about education, but the subject has to be related.

I am writing about a news item in Fort Smith¹s Southwest Times Record telling of a convicted thief suing the Fort Smith Dillard¹s department store and two employees for one million dollars in connection with the theft.

I am shocked! I can¹t find words to express my feelings. Has the person no conscience at all?

A lawsuit was filed on behalf of a forty-year-old woman in Sebastian County Circuit Court accusing the department store employees of false imprisonment and defamation. The employees had held the thief until the police came and arrested her and took her to jail. On April 21, the Circuit Court Judge found her guilty of misdemeanor theft of property in a bench trial, imposed a one-year suspended sentence, and ordered her to pay $650 in court costs and fines.

In her suit, the woman complains that the store employees¹ actions caused her extreme distress, mental anguish, and loss of reputation.

I can see how situation ethics and perhaps sensitivity training (both introduced into the schools in the sixties) would foster such thinking, but surely there is more. It has been twenty-five years since I was in the classroom. Have there been other detrimental ideas introduced to promote such actions? And what kind of lawyers would represent a convicted thief? Or what court would hear the case? Or is the woman just plain nuts?

The "conscience" flaw isn't so much a fault of the criminal; we know they have no conscience. But any judge who doesn't throw this out of court immediately is basically retarded and should be either recalled or impeached.
Any lawyer that would represent a criminal in a suit like this should be disbarred.
