CD Drive Stuck Drive On Eject/Load Routine Continuously... Please Help!
Self

Posted on 08/07/2003 3:08:38 AM PDT by bd476

Is it cool to just seal this thing off with Duct Tape or would black electrical tape be more hip? How about hitting it with a hammer, just a tap... will that help?

The CD/CDR drive is continually opening and closing by itself. I tried running a maintenance program on it but it's freezing up and ridiculously slow. I've checked to see if the manual button for the CD/CDR drive is stuck and it's okay. I also checked the eject button on the keyboard.

Any chance that this is a virus? Should I take a photo in hopes that George Noury/Art Bell will put it in their "Ghost" files?

This is maddening. Any solutions, cures, help or otherwise workable suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Oh yes, it does stop the opening and closing thing when I power off. If computers had tongues, this thing would resemble one nasty computer. ARGH!

I had this happen myself. Freakin' thing appeared to be possessed. I replaced the CD-ROM drive only to discover problems in the floppy drive. I replaced the floppy drive and all was well again.

3.5" diskette A: drives are even cheaper. It should be checked first. If it's like my situation it would be dead, but since it's rarely used today that could be overlooked. Simply unplugging it from the motherboard will tell the story.

Turn computer off. Open it and remove connecting plugs from CD-R. Turn computer on and use it without CD-R. Tomorrow plug it (CD-R) back in and if you are lucky it will work right.

"I have no advice,..."

Thanks, Flyer. It's the thought that counts.

"...but I have to post to this thread because I know it will be a classic.""

Hmmm, okay, in case that was a compliment, thank you kindly.

"...(if it gets to stay)"

I hope it does get to stay, because I am sincerely asking begging for help. ARGH! (again)

Check all other media drives. If one is found dead, replace it first.

Sounds like a virus...Sargent-A, Vampire or a number of others could do this. Run a virus check if you can.

You can run one online from a number of places including ...Here - Trend Micro

If no virus is found it's probably a hardware conflict of some sort.

Hope it helps, good luck.

That pretty much describes the basic look, HiTech.

Strange that replacing the floppy drive helped fix the CD drive, but hey, if it works it is great you found the solution for your computer.

Thanks for the idea.

Well, these kind of threads tend to bring out the humor in us. On a side note. . . in the car the other day I clicked the door power lock. They locked and then promptly unlocked. I locked them again, they unlocked again. They finally stayed locked on the 4th try.

This makes sense. Thanks Dennis.

Just one question though, are there any distinguishing features on the connecting plugs, such as color or shape? I have never opened up a computer, and don't want to unplug the wrong thing.

I am unable to access the Help/Support program on the computer. I ran this thing in Safe Mode and still could not access the Help program. Then I tried to go through My Computer (yes, sadly, I'm on Windoze) and it froze when I clicked on CDR properties.

Our old minivan had power everything including automatic door locks. When you hit a certain speed anything that wasn't locked would lock by themselves. Something like..."Bang, bang, bang bang, bang!" Wife knew about this but the first time I drove it I didn't realize what was happneing. I slammed on the brakes and started looking around for some hoodlum throwing stones.

Wife was amused.

Thankfully our minvan now DOES NOT have that sort of nonsense.

Well I guess I'm better of than you. Mine just won't record, but it does only open and close on command.

Hope that helps.
