The Bishops who voted NO have to "consider" the pensions of all their priests (and themselves and staff) and the property issue, I would think. Long hard fought legal battles with the National Church who holds all the money.

Diocese of Atlanta is northern half of GA, but as a matter of fact represents Atlanta, where the overwhelming majority of the Episcopalians are. New bishop Alexander voted YES (just as we expected). Diocese of GA is southern half of State. Bishop Louttit (a GOOD Bible believing conservative) voted NO, representing the good rural Episcopalians of GA.

My parents are thankfully in Louttit's diocese. We are stuck with Alexander (but "not for very much longer," as Riff-Raff said . .. :-D )

Easton is my former diocese. It includes the Eastern Shore of Maryland only. Delaware is a separate diocese and the Eastern Shore of Va. is part of the diocese of Southern Va.

"Quincy could be Illinois."

You are correct. Quincy is in Illinois. I was baptized and confirmed in that diocese.

Seeing an Indianapolis name-Catherine Waynick, in the YES list, certainly woke me up. What a bummer.

In other words, they may huff and puff, but in the end they're not leaving.

It's not quite that clear cut.

In the Episcopal Church, most property is in the name of the bishop, holding for the diocese. The national church will try to claim that the bishops are holding in trust for the national church, but the bishops have a solid argument that the national church is merely an administrative body. It will have to be litigated, but at least by the law of my state, the bishops have a good shot at it.

Technically, a diocesan bishop if he has the support of his diocesan convention should have no problem removing his diocese from ECUSA. Under all the Canons & By Laws, Dioceses own the property.

The denominational HQ of ECUSA is actually organized as a "mission society" with all the dioceses as voluntary participants. Until the 20's or so the Presiding Bishop was actually the senior diocesan until they decided to organize on a corporate approach.

You're right. This isn't a slam dunk in any event. The only one winning this one are the stinkin' lawyers again. There is going to be a fight literally over billions of dollars of real estate and pension fund money.

The Pension Fund is another matter. It's a separate unit. From what I understand, you are vested after 5 years so most clergy could bail.

So all the Hill Air Force base workers and state workers and Novell workers and ___, who are Mormon, don't vote for democrats? I'm not sure I would put as much faith in your assessment as you do.

It is not very far from one son to Orrin Hatch the tennis pal of Ted Kennedy. Didn't Hatch and Jeffords sing together?

Does the son become a senator when Hatch retires? Does conservative Utah elect to RATS like South Dakota? The fight is deeper than you may think.

Thought you might be interested in AMiA's Statement on Robinson. Their web site is:

The Rt. Rev. Charles Murphy, Chairman of the Anglican Mission.

The Anglican Mission in America, part of the worldwide Anglican Communion as an outreach of the province of Rwanda, has weighed in on the Episcopal Church’s decision to confirm the first openly gay bishop in the history of the Christian Church.

In voicing its disapproval, the Anglican Mission contends that the central issue is not, at its core, about homosexual practice or lifestyle, although the 1998 global meeting of Anglican bishops [Lambeth Conference] unambiguously declared the practice and lifestyle to be incompatible with Scripture.

“The real issue before us is a church, the Episcopal Church in this country (ECUSA), that is in direct conflict with the Scriptures” declared the Rt. Rev. Chuck Murphy, the Anglican Mission’s Chairman.

Murphy cited a December,1997 interview with the Philadelphia Inquirer Magazine in which the Episcopal Church’s Presiding Bishop, Frank Griswold, acknowledged as much, by stating:

“Broadly speaking, the Episcopal Church is in conflict with scripture. ... (One) would have to say that the mind of Christ operative in the church over time ... has led the church to in effect contradict the words of the Gospel."

Murphy notes that "it is this kind of confusion and presumption from the very highest levels of leadership in the U.S. Episcopal Church that has now produced both this latest vote to confirm the election of Gene Robinson, and the severe crisis of Faith and leadership that now exists within the worldwide Anglican Communion. The situation now before us within the U.S. Episcopal Church demands correction, and invites the outside intervention that will, I am sure, be forthcoming."

The Anglican Mission in America is a missionary outreach of the Anglican Province of Rwanda, established three years ago in response to the crisis of faith and leadership that exists within the Episcopal Church, to focus on reaching out to the 130 million spiritually-disconnected people in the United States. The Anglican Mission is a growing movement of churches now stretching throughout the United States.
