"However, in recent days the critics have fallen silent as word quietly leaked from Iraq that major discoveries have already been made and are now being documented completely. Bush administration officials are keeping any such discoveries secret for the moment.

This is the most profound statement in the article!

Everyone new of the Iraqi jets buried in the sand before the conflict began...That is one of the reasons Saddam executed his top Air Force General because he stood down per our military's instructions......

Wait....Rumsfield at Bush's direction is carefully cataloging all WMD sites and documantary evidence for a comprehensive presentation to Congress and the American people sometime this fall... The DemoRats will be scurrying for cover......

Sure. If you have the money, talent, and the parts. That being said, I very seriously doubt that they would have ever flown again under Saddam's flag.

However, the U.S. may just get them flying again for the new Iraq government so that they can defend themselves.

The MiG-25 was originally designed in response to the North American XB-70.

Firefox, from the movie. Russian superplane stolen by James Coburn. I just thought it fun that a Russian superplane with "fox" in its name would turn up in the desert.

When you think about the mentality that would bury a jet in the sand, it explains a lot.

Hence, the "16 words/W lied" attacks of recent. Oh, I loathe the presstitutes and Rats....

Coburn looked a lot like Clint Eastwood back then.

I doubt these birds are any threat at all
I wouldn't underestimate them. Most of our aircraft are 20+ years old too. This is one of the fastest most maneuverable aircraft around. In the hands of a skilled pilot that is and our guys are the best!

Somebody should have told these stupid monkeys that in a war your jet fighters are supposed to be sitting on runways prepped for battle, not buried under tons of sand. No wonder we beat these clowns so easily.

Stupid question, but wouldn't all that sand destroy the plane, by getting into the gears, engines, moving parts?

the Soviet shipbuilders cut back on radiation shielding
Yep. Seems like they viewed people as just another asset.

Yes. If you ran them before you thoroughly disassembled and cleaned them.

Uh, gee...how come we didn't find these hidden things right away?

Actually, we did find some back in April as well, it just wasn't as well publicized in the US media...from the UK Telegraph...

More than 50 fighter aircraft, anti-aircraft missiles and guns and huge amounts of ammunition have been found buried and hidden at a base in western Iraq. The aircraft, many in good condition, included three Russian-made Mig 25s, one of the fastest fighters in the world. Some were buried, while others were concealed in buildings and under camouflage netting.

Half of Saddam's combat fighter force unearthed

That's OK. If it makes you feel any better, I get James Coburn and Lee Marvin mixed up all the time. ;-)
