There's nothing wrong with Charles Shaw, it reminds me of much of the Chilean wine that was being imported 10 years ago (and Australia 20) and look where they are now.
It is as good as most $10-$15 bottles here in the US and definitely better than 90% of that crap "vin de pays" that the french unload on unsuspecting Americans. I've also found it as good as some $20 bottles made by American vintners who have been riding on the coattails of one good vintage in the 80's, I won't mention any names. I admit it tends to be more flowery and fruity than I prefer, but for the cost is packs quite a bit of flavor.
I wouldn't serve TBC on a dinner table, but as far as quaffing a glass when you get home from work, it's more than adequate. Most people can't afford a $25-$50 (or more) bottle of wine very night. With all the CA wine makers pushing their prices higher and higher, I appreciate it when one comes along whose goal is to make a drinkable product within the reach of most consumers. In my opinion, the majority of CA wine (and definitely French) is overpriced and prey on a public who thinks because they pay more it must be better. It ain't. Vinters have a habit of not only bumping their prices repeatedly, but charging the same price (or more) they commanded during their best years for lousy wines in off years.
Wine should be judged as whether you're getting good value for your money. A Toyota Camry is not a Ferrari, but then again it's only 20K, not 150. I may appreciate a Ferrari for it's looks, handling and speed but that doesn't mean all other cars suck simply because they are not Ferraris. TBC delivers more bang for the buck than any other wine and is a suitable choice when you're serving it to people who don't know a taste-vin from a decanter.
And I'll say it one more time, no country produces more swill than France. They produce some of the worlds most stunning cabs, pinot's and chards, but I've found the everyday wine is mostly undrinkable at the prices they charge.

I do not drink French wine...I have been boycotting that country for about 15 years.
I love ya, but you are so wrong about Charles Shaw. It is undrinkable in my humble opinion. It is foul stuff and should come in a box.
There are plenty of inexpensive wines that are much better.
Try the YellowTail line for $4.99 or I could suggest any number of wines in the under $15 range that will make you realize what utter crap 2 buck chuck is....I am no wine snob, but I can't even consume that while drunk!

I have to agree about Chuck Shaw. If you want cheap yet drinkable, Mondavi's Woodbridge jug wine is one of the best values out there IMHO.
