Auxilia: Auxiliary troops (auxilia) were composed of noncitizens, usually from the various Roman provinces. As their name suggests, they were intended to supplement the legionary infantry that was the backbone of the Roman army by employing different methods of fighting, including light-armed infantry, slingers, archers, and especially cavalry.
