Guess what, Willie -- those Medicare prescription drug benefits are specifically intended to remove a bunch of retirees from the insurance plans of major U.S. corporations like General Motors. To make them more competitive with companies like Toyota, Honda, and Volkswagen.

You can't have it both ways.

In case you didn't know this -- despite all predictions to the contrary, Bush actually got more votes in Florida among senior citizens than Gore did.

If General Motors spends $1,000 per person per year on its prescription drug plan for retirees, and Uncle Sam comes along and takes them off the rolls for $800 apiece, you can bet that America becomes more "competitive."

One thing is for certain -- no company in America is going to be competitive if it is providing retirees with better benefits than it gives its current employees.
