Washington, Aug 3. (PTI): David Mulford, former US Treasury Undersecretary for International Affairs and a prominent investment banker, is "a lead candidate" for Ambassador to India, media reports said today.
Mulford, the international Chairman of Credit Suisse First Boston, was Undersecretary during the presidency of George Bush senior, the Wall Street Journal reported.
Mulford "has been a London-based deal-maker and financial adviser to Saudi Arabia," the paper noted, referring to his stint as chief investment adviser to the Saudi Arabia Monetary Fund before serving Bush senior's administration between 1989 and 1992.
Mulford holds Ph.D. from Britain's Oxford University. He graduated from Lawrence University, Wisconsin in 1959. He had written two books on Africa.
An investment banker of more than 30-year standing, Mulford is an advocate of economic reforms.
Robert Blackwill, the former ambassador, has returned to Washington this week at the end of his two-year tenure.

Robert Blackwill, the former ambassador, returned to Washington this week at the end of his two-year tenure.
According to analysts, if Mulford is appointed, it could mean that the Bush administration is shifting from the political aspects of the Indo-American relationship which was prominent during the stint of Robert Blackwill, to highlighting the economic aspects, though the political side of the relationship will continue to get considerable attention.
