On Friday, 67 days before the Oct. 7 recall election of Democratic Gov. Gray Davis, 258 Californians have picked up the necessary paperwork to run for governor. Democratic Sen. Barbara Boxer joins California's congressional Democrats in suggesting the party may need a backup candidate in case Davis loses. Fellow Democratic Sen. Dianne Feinstein remains mum on entering the race.

FOLLOW THE MONEY:
Campaign finance reports show Republican candidate Bill Simon enters the recall campaign Davis still $9.5 million in debt from his unsuccessful 2002 race. Simon lent the money to his campaign and has not been repaid.
California Secretary of State Kevin Shelley now estimates the recall will cost California $67 million, more than twice the original estimate.

ONLY IN CALIFORNIA:
Hustler magazine publisher Larry Flynt announced he is running to replace Davis and says he will expand casino gambling to erase the state's budget deficit. Flynt, 61, a registered Democrat from Los Angeles, says he has name recognition and "took a bullet for the First Amendment." A gunman shot and crippled the porn czar in 1978.
A spokesman for Republican movie star Arnold Schwarzenegger says the "Terminator" will announce on Wednesday whether he will run for governor, and will elaborate on his decision that evening on "The Tonight Show."

CAMPAIGN TRAIL:
Davis campaign sources say Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, D-N.Y., will campaign for the Democratic governor next week in San Diego and the Bay Area. Davis says he and his wife are taking inspiration from the former first lady's book, "Living History." Former President Clinton and Vice President Al Gore are also expected to stump California for Davis.

QUOTE OF THE DAY:
"If they do the trashy campaign on Dick Riordan ... I think there are going to be prominent Democrats that will defect and just say, 'We're tired of that puke politics. Don't you dare do it again or we're just going to help pull the plug.' There is a growing list of prominent Democrats that, if that's how it evolves, are going to jump ship." - California's Democratic Attorney General Bill Lockyer, on the Davis campaign.

According to the John and Ken show on KABC, the Democrats polled voters and found that people started strongly resisting a recall above $60 million. What a coincidence.

With the candidates in random order, no less. And a possibility of multiple candidates with the same first and last name.
Actually, I think Davis is deriving his inspiration from a book he read about Boss Tweed and Tammany Hall.
