Death of Bob Hope
By the President of the United States of America
A Proclamation
Today, America mourns the loss of one of its great treasures. A gifted comedian who entertained audiences for decades with his unique talents, Bob Hope brought joy and laughter to our Nation. By tirelessly entertaining America's troops, he demonstrated his extraordinary love of country and devotion to the men and women who have served in our military.
As a mark of respect for the memory of Bob Hope, I hereby order, by the authority vested in me as President of the United States by the Constitution and the laws of the United States of America, that on the day of his interment, the flag of the United States shall be flown at half-staff at the White House and upon all public buildings and grounds, at all military posts and naval stations, and on all naval vessels of the Federal Government in the District of Columbia and throughout the United States and its Territories and possessions until sunset on such day. I also direct that the flag shall be flown at half-staff for the same period at all United States embassies, legations, consular offices, and other facilities abroad, including all military facilities and naval vessels and stations.
IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand this twenty-eighth day of July, in the year of our Lord two thousand three, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and twenty-eighth.
GEORGE W. BUSH
TOPICS: Government; Miscellaneous
KEYWORDS: bobhope; bush; doj; flag; halfmast; oops; proclamation
Above is the proclamation issued by President Bush on Monday. The Department of Justice building located on 601 D St. NW, Washington, DC did not deem it necessary to place the flag at half-mast. I spoke with two of the security guards during the day regarding this manner, and the situation remained the same. I think it is a shame and highly disrespectful that a government building housing a part of the Executive Branch, blatantly ignores a proclamation from the President.

Wonder why this isn't in breaking news, or why umpteen people haven't put up bunches of simultaneous threads commemorating this earth shattering event?

Maybe it's not earth shattering. Perhaps it is not as earth shattering as Canadian government officicals passing around a memo calling the President "shrub." I get your sarcasm. It just pisses me off the total disrespect shown to Bush. You see it everywhere - from other national leaders (our supposed allies), to the press to those in the Executive Branch.
By the way - is your tagline a lyric from a Zappa song? It sounds like Zappa.

Just supposed to be done for one day, it seems. The day he's buried.
When is that supposed to occur, or has he already been buried?

It also reminds me of a joke I heard years ago. Someone said after watching five minutes of something like Barney, you have to watch two hours of Discovery Channel to mental floss your brain. LOL.

The Just-is Department weenies are a law unto themselves. Truthfully, I would suspect a bureaucratic SNAFU but who knows. The rent-a-cops should have been alert enough to do something when notified of their oversight. DC is a whole 'nother world. I've been living and working in this area for 16 years and any resemblance to reality is purely cooincidental.

Hmmmm... I missed the day of his internment phrase. Maybe they are waiting for the day of his internment. Even so, the guards should have respectfuly responded to a citizen's question. I think Bob Hope rates more than a day, but that is just me.

Bob Hope's Family Holds Quiet Funeral
VOA News
30 Jul 2003, 18:50 UTC
AP
Bob Hope Bob Hope, the legendary entertainer who died Sunday of pneumonia at the age of 100, has been quietly buried in suburban Los Angeles following a private funeral mass.
The sunrise service at the San Fernando Mission cemetery was attended by some 100 family members and close friends. Streets around the cemetery were blocked by police to give the family privacy.
The British-born Hope starred on stage, television and in nearly 60 movies. His career spanned more than 70 years. But he is perhaps best remembered for his untiring work entertaining U.S. troops overseas, a tour of personal duty that lasted from World War II until the first Gulf War.
President Bush said in a proclamation Monday that as a mark of respect for Hope, flags were to be lowered at the White House, public buildings, U.S. ships and U.S. posts and military installations worldwide Wednesday, the day of his burial.
Hope is survived by his wife, Dolores, four children and four grandchildren. Hope's daughter, Linda, said his impending death gave rise to one of his last jokes. When asked by his wife where he wanted to be buried, Hope answered, "surprise me."
A public memorial service for the beloved comedian will be held August 27

Correct, and that would have been yesterday, precisely the day that the Justice Department didn't lower the flag.

BTW, I think most government offices missed lowering the flag yesterday. This is probably because of the fact that Bob Hope's family kept the burial ceremony so private and it wasn't announced until after the fact.
Perhaps President Bush should issue another proclamation for August 27, when the public memorial service is planned.

Sound to me like you should make a call to the vfw's. There is got to be a vfw building there some where.
For them to show disrespt to a man that did so much for our military men and women.
Isn't right.

I do believe there is a ship named after him. I will contact the local VFW. I also sent this notice to the White House.

USNS Bob Hope Pays Tribute to Namesake
a new class of sealift ships will be named for the entertainer Bob Hope. USNS Bob Hope will be the lead ship in the new Bob Hope class of sealift ships being built by Avondale Industries, Inc., New Orleans, Louisiana. Up to six new ships, called Large, Medium-Speed, Roll-on/Roll-off ships, are expected to be built with the lead ship scheduled to enter service in early 1998. In making the announcement, Secretary Dalton called Mr. Hope a "military hero" and said "we can never repay him for his contributions to the men and women in uniform, but we can show our appreciation with a class of ships named in his honor. This is our way of saying thanks for the memories."
The lead ship was named Bob Hope in honor of his more than 50 years of support to U.S. forces stationed around the world. With the USNS Bob Hope coming into service, the spirit of this renowned entertainer will continue to support the armed forces for many years to come.
