Arkansas Official Ousted Over 'Illegal Poem'

Leftists went into a frenzy when New Jersey finally dumped its poet laureate after he blamed Israel for 9/11, but we doubt if they'll come to the aid of an Arkansas official ousted because of a very different kind of poem.

W.R. "Bud" Harper, Arkansas' top emergency official, resigned under fire today after pressure groups and politicians condemned him for forwarding to his 66 employees "Illegal Poem," which has been all the rage on the Internet.

"The forwarded e-mail was neither humorous nor acceptable," huffed GOP Gov. Mike Huckabee.

"I believe in a strong work ethic. Aside from that I have no statement, cause or agenda," he said.

"Whoever got concerned about this really had to reach to find something. I am very sensitive to people and I care about people. There was no intention ... to create any hard feelings."

The accent is wrong.

Most of the Pakistani guys I know are entirely too tight with their money to give it to any ne'er do well relative.

Doesn't mean welfare cheating doesn't go on ~ it does!

If you recall it was 1997 when Welfare Reform was passed. Within weeks it seemed welfare rolls were trimmed substantially. Congress took the credit.

Actually, Congress was premature in congratulating itself. A postal rule called "MOVE UPDATE", combined with a list and address matching program called "FAST FORWARD" served to clean out the welfare rolls.

Seems a rule put in place way back in the days when AFDC was created (circa Franklin Roosevelt's regime) required that anybody receiving welfare (AFDC) or the early equivalent of SSA who moved had to visit a welfare caseworker or the checks would be cut off.

"Fast Forward", which was implemented to satisfy the "Move Update" rule, found all the welfare recipients who had moved over the previous three years. Those checks were eliminated immediately! Word spread across the country and each state welfare agency cut off the clients who had moved.

In some states over half of the clients were removed from the rolls in this manner. It seems to me they didn't come back. The conclusion is that welfare cheating was rampant, the Dems were wrong about it, and the Republicans were totally correct.

"Move Update" and "Fast Forward" are still on the job keeping the larcenous out of the system.

BTW, the recent Presidential Commission on the Postal Service did not address this issue, just ways to cut USPS employees and retirees from the federal employees health benefit program, which suggests to me the "commission" wasn't about "mail", but about how much standard rate mailers want to pay (which ain't all that much). Those people could care less if the taxpayers are getting ripped off by welfare cheats just so long as they get theirs.
