[history]
There was a tinge of pride in Herb Wesson's voice Tuesday afternoon when he announced that a marathon, all-night session of the state Assembly to hammer out a final agreement on the overdue state budget had surpassed the infamous 1963 "lock-up" of Republicans by legendary Speaker Jesse Unruh.

I know Gray Davis considers himself one of the winners. Now that there's a budget (warts and all), there is a possibility that the heat on him will subside. From the most recent poll on the recall, it was 51% who favored the recall, 43% who did not. All Davis needs to do is convince 5% of those who favor the recall that keeping him isn't such a bad idea. There are enough people who will think the budget mess is solved to equal at least the 5% he needs to convince. Davis is far from toast.

When do we find out what's really in the budget ?
This back slapping, especially between politicians just doesn't hit the spot for me.

....the 35 million residents of California..... are losers because the Capitol was once again unable to come to grips with the state's fundamental fiscal crisis, and thus demonstrated anew that California also has a fundamental crisis of governance as well. This phoney budget will fool only the moron contingent - which is Cal is considerable. These fools have only put off the inevitable financial crisis for another year - a year in which they hope the economy will turn around enough to fill the coffers with tax dollars anew. The SOB's are dreaming of the "fat, rich, lazy" days of the 1990's - a decade built on phoney corporate financing and even phonier government financing. I wonder how many voters realize that the Enron-type accounting was not invented by Enron - but by government?

Exactly. This is by the way, an Enron budget. If a private company put together this kind of a budget, its top officials would face jail time.

I agree. My point was that all Gray Davis needs to do is convince 5% of the "yes on recall" folks (from the latest poll, the 'yes' folks have an 8% lead), and the percentage of gullible people in California is more than 5%.
