Evergreen student wounded in West Bank protest

By The Associated Press

OLYMPIA — A student from The Evergreen State College was wounded in the West Bank during a protest against Israel's construction of a security fence there. Sam Tsohonis, 26, an art major at the Olympia college, was hit in the leg by a rubber-coated bullet near the village of Anin on Monday. Israeli soldiers wounded five people when they fired rubber bullets and tear gas to disperse protesters trying to cut or push through the fence.

Israelis say the barrier is needed to stop militants from entering Israel to carry out attacks. But Palestinians say the project amounts to a land-grab that cuts them off from agricultural fields, towns and jobs.

Tsohonis has spent about two weeks in the West Bank as part of a two-month volunteer stint for the Palestinian-backed International Solidarity Movement.

Rachel Corrie, 23, also an Evergreen student and an International Solidarity Movement volunteer, was crushed to death in March by an Israeli bulldozer while she tried to block it from advancing on a Palestinian home.

Marci Tsohonis of Wenatchee, Sam's mother, said her son was a friend of Corrie. She said she spoke to her son by cell phone and he told her that the rubber bullet grazed his leg and tore off some flesh. He expects to be off his feet for a few days, she said.

She said Tsohonis remains committed to staying in the West Bank. He hopes to paint a mural in a Palestinian hospital nursery that was named for Corrie.

"He wanted to do it to promote peace," Marci Tsohonis said

At college, I have seen a "Bush Knew" bumper sticker. I also saw an ugly pinch-faced faculty member with a bumper sticker reading "The Road to Hell is Paved with Republicans" on her car.

We couldn't be so lucky.

They'd probably just block traffic with a symbolic die-in (they've done that before).

Good thing the PA did not take him to a hospital in one of their ambulances. By now he would have been dead and the Israelis blamed.

It has been my experience that the majority of art students are a scummy lot. There is no amount of liberal b.s. that they will not swallow.

Yeah...and with these people "liberal" is way, way, way far to the right of where they are!

And, they act shocked when they're fired upon.

I bet those protestors are the same ones who said that we had no business poking our noses in Iraq's business.

The photos are helpful to get an idea what these pests are up to. Trying to destroy property with hatchets and hammers. Idiots!

To: Seeking the truth

There are tons of 23 and 26 year olds who are still undergrad. They are either paying their way through college, were in the military first, changed majors, or working on a five year degree such as chemical engineering. However, I doubt any of these apply to our young hippies in discussion.

Claymores or small directional mines on the fence would put a quick end to that nonsense.
Or wire the fence for @1000VaC...

Do all neurotic promoters of peace live the hate-filled contradiction as what'shername did in the now famous photographs?
Does twinkletoes here have similar photos we can see?

"Born OK the first time" bumper stickers.

I would love to run across some of these...

I have some "That's a Matter of Opinion" bumper stickers to add to those volvos.

Well, look at the requirements.

They're all a few nuggets short of a happy meal...

Edskid sat for a moment, letting the waves of Marci Tsohonis' self-important fantasy world wash across his consciousness. Ahh... relax... mmm... reality is meaningless... ooh... peace and love... oh, yeah...

Ah my local college is at it again. TESC is 2 miles west from where I now sit, and 50 light years left of Berkeley.

Well, it looks like no one else will do it, so I will defend my Alma Mater. Evergreen has been consistently ranked in the top ten small colleges in the nation. Small class sizes, nice campus and location. Just over thirty years old.

The far left claim is for the most part true, but there are right wing students too. There may be a right wing professor or two, no one knows for certain.
