New Play Toy!!! (Firearm)
Today I strolled into a local gunshop and much to my amazement I found a Steyr M40 (NIB) for $399.00. Id always been interested in the Steyr ever since it came out specifically the smaller s series and more so the S357.
Well I just could not pass up such a good deal, Ive seen this gun in shops down south, (GA, TN, SC) for as much as $519.00, so when I saw the $399.00 I had to have it.
Bought a pistol blanket for her, four boxes of Speer plinking ammo and some .40 cal cleaning supplies (bore brush, pads etc
) as this is my first 40.
Shot it already and WOW!!!
Accurate, once you get use to the trapezoid sites, trigger is short, very short and crisp, nice break around 5 pounds.
It is a very tight gun, first time I tried to apply the manual safety I couldnt, took three or four tries now it moves just as the manual says it should, with two fingers.
I will most likely buy a tac-lite for this and a .357 barrel, and (pray) once the AWB goes away Ill get me a few normal capacity mags for it (12 rounds) and then shell make a rather nice beside the bed gun.
Its so nice to be able to buy a gun in a gun friendly state!

Established authors and film makers have much more leeway to take creative or counter-current "flyers," but a new guy has to be very calculating about matching his "product" to his expected audience.
For example, I don't use the F-word even one time. SOme S-words, but that' it. "You freakin' moron!" etc. works as a good substitute for a few F-words, without turning off a large part of the conservative readership.

I just gave final go-ahead to the printer today after all the proofs going back and forth. Should be printed and bound next week, and when I get back in town after August 12, I should be ready to start stuffing padded mailing envelopes!
It's getting close.

I liked the gun culture lessons in UC as well, but I wonder if it deterred some readers from sticking with the book until the plot kicked in.

That's true but I don't know how he started in the industry. I get the feeling he printed the books on his own and sold them at gunshows at the beginning. That's the only place I've ever seen them.
There is a lot of sex in his book but I don't recall a single graphic scene except the rape victim who "prepares" for the inevitable in the van. Even the rape victim on the canoe trip wasn't as graphic as it could have been.
I bought two copies. One is a loaner and the other is in case the other never makes it back to me.

John Ross didn't self publish, he had a small printer of mostly reloading related booklets (Accurate Press I believe) to print their first giant hardback book. I think he has sold 50,000 copies, mostly on Amazon.com and at gun shows. I plan to do the same initially, and also to get them distributed through gun stores.
The internet has come light years since he wrote UC, so I have a lot of advantages that weren't open to him in 96 in terms of promotion and distribution. I understand he is writing another RKBA novel today, for release next year.

Thanks for the information. I heard he was working on a sequel but I hope not. There's nothing I hate more than to read a book with a definite ending and then have the suspense happen all over again like the previous action never happened.

I'm filling them in the order they came in, so I think you're pretty much near the front of the line!
(The earliest are orders from January, if you can believe it.)

I was going to tell you that there can't be a sequel to Enemies, but then I think, "never say never."

Just checking back to your Steyr post. I was thinking of a CZ 75 at the time, but there's a great deal out there on the Steyrs. I can get my hands on an M9 (same action as the M40) for $350 including transfers and tax. I'll go with the lowest FFL bidder, since I'm moving in 8 months and hopefully won't need to have a close relationship with the local gunsmith here.
But reading up on the M9/M40 series, it really sounds like a great gun. The weird sights get the most criticism, but if this is the biggest problem people can come up with, it's already better than almost everything out there. I'm also -very- new to handguns - I was raised on shotguns - so I like all of the unique and regular safeties. Let me know if you've have any long range opinions on this piece. I think I'm gonna go ahead and get one.

If it's a gut shot, you don't need to dress it out!

I always get a kick out of these "blast from the past" postings. I keep looking at the heading and thinking, "Didn't we discuss this already?"
