Wish us luck Kristinn - the San Diego Chapter will be having it first official FReep on Monday, August 4, in La Jolla, where Hitlery will be signing her books.
I talked to the broadly smiling police department Sargeant today. We don't need a permit for a group less than 200. We just cannot block entry or exit to the store. I still have to find out about putting stakes on our signs. SDPD said I needed to contact the Secret Service about the signs.
I'm excited! La Jolla is a very elite area north of San Diego, and I do not expect we will get a very friendly reception. Whatever .. They're going to know we were there.

Best o' luck to you!
We've never had to consult with the USSS about our signs as local rules prevail. We mainly use lightweight wooden dowels, yardsticks or the like--nothing that could be used to seriously hurt someone, which is what most LEOs are concerned about.

The problem with sticks is that no matter what you tell people, a few end up coming with unnapproved varieties and when confronted with verbally abusive dems, the thought of whacking them on the head can flash through anyones mind (lawsuit time). We've gotten around that by asking people to not bring any sticks and to hold their signs. If sticks show up, they can go back in the car.
Better safe than sorry.

A paint stirrer, attached so that only the curved handle is exposed, is good.
Also, a cardboard tube, flattened is good. That passed muster in NYC where the police were very strict when the Chinese premiere was there. It was long enough to hold high.
Next time I Freep, I'm going to try two tubes stapled in one length. Long enough to let rest on the ground, yet be high enough to see.

I think the problem we're going to have is with local businesses. Warwick's is on the busiest street in Downtown La Jolla. I think we're lucky because it's a Monday...but we'll see. I'm just wondering where we will stand. I guess we'll have to be on the other side of the street, I guess in front of the Union Bank.

I remember some of the best seafood I ever had was at the Marine Room in La Jolla.
