Palestinian Authority Minister of State for Security Muhammad Dahlan warned that the prisoner release issue would destroy the hudna and the positive feeling following his and PA Prime Minister Mahmoud Abbas's US visit, if Israel continues to refuse to coordinate with the PA the names of those it plans to release.
His comments came as the US administration welcomed Israel's decision to free some 540 Palestinian prisoners, including 210 affiliated with Hamas and Islamic Jihad.
Dahlan said Israel included 120 petty criminals not security and political prisoners in the list of Palestinians slated for release from Israeli prisons. "If they want to play games with us... and if they continue to refuse to coordinate the release of prisoners with us, the prisoner issue will ruin everything," he told The Jerusalem Post.
Dahlan met with CIA director George Tenet and other US officials, and presented his security plan.
A PA official said the US accepted Dahlan's plan, in which he said he would take measures against those who violate the hudna, and stop the smuggling of weapons. Dahlan also outlined the measures he intends to take in the future once the Palestinian population starts to reap the advantages of the road map, the official added.
At the same time, Dahlan explained his and Abbas's difficulties, and tried to convince the US that he cannot take measures against the terrorist infrastructure unless Israel bends on the release of Palestinian prisoners, and starts to implement its part of the road map.
Israel argues that the PA is still not willing to take measures against the terrorist infrastructure, and says terrorist organizations are using the cease-fire to smuggle weapons into PA areas, and train and recruit terrorists.
Dahlan will meet later this week with Defense Minister Shaul Mofaz to discuss the handover of two more West Bank cities to the PA.
Meanwhile, a senior Fatah official told Itim yesterday that Abbas would not be "redeemed on his return from the US unless he arrives at [PA Chairman Yasser] Arafat's bureau and tells him that the Americans promised that the siege on the Mukata would be lifted," or else "the smile that was on his face at the press conference would cost him dearly."
Arafat and his advisers are not interested in the removal of roadblocks in Palestinian villages and towns, and only want the removal of the siege on Arafat, the official said.
Muhammad Hourani, a Fatah legislator, said he believes the siege on Arafat will be lifted in the future. More important is easing the closure on the Palestinian people and removing checkpoints, he said.
Hourani said Abbas will not face a no-confidence vote from the Palestinian Legislative Council, since most legislators realize that he managed to improve US-Palestinian relations and get the US administration involved in the peace process again.
According to one PA minister, "Apart from those who always nag, everybody agrees that Abu Mazen's [Abbas's] visit to the United States was successful in many aspects."
A Fatah source said there were some Arafat loyalists who wanted to undermine Abbas's achievements in the US by highlighting that he was unable to convince the US and Israel to lift the siege on Arafat. "They fear that Abbas will be able to deliver real progress to the people, which would undermine Arafat," he said.
Of course it will destroy the hudna, as it would interfer with the terrorists rearming and strengthening, as that is the definition of hunda! (as they are counting on the released terrorists to refill the terror ranks)
Instead of complaining about the White House, why not ask your representatives to ask the WH to ask the PM Sharon to ask the Israeli Cabinet to do something. Why are these terrorists even still alive ? It is an Israeli decision.
Your naivete is glaring.
Of course it's not enough. Jihad is eternal. Israel could surrender all of Jerusalem, the West bank and Gaza and it wouldn't be enough. They must continue Jihad until the land of Israel is back under Islamoid command. Islamic doctrine states that once a territory is ruled by Islamics it must never be allowed to be ruled by non Muslims.
1. for the death penalty to be reintroduced the Knesset must vote on it and there are more left then right in it.
2. the cabinet voted on the prisoner release and it won 14 to 9 objections.
Want to know the difference between a hudna and a cease fire? In a hudna, they never stop firing. They are still attacking, same as usual, but now we pretend there is peace. Today a young child was shot in a drive by, and a bomb was defused that was set to blow up a passing car. Yesterday they captured a guy setting up a suicide bomber, and the week before they even captured some suicide bombers on the way to an attack, while one young man was kidnapped and slaughtered in a field.
Some how chopping that guy up was a "positive feeling" for the Palestinians that we should respect by doing what they demand.
This Hudna Bull Shirt is just a dog and pony show for the American Media. Something for Bush to pretend he is accomplishing gains from the Palestinians, a real peace in our time scenario. All he has accomplished is the release of convicted terrorists, the rearming of Arafats terrorist wings, the refinancing of his corrupt administration so Arafat will not have to use his already stolen Five Billion dollars personal stash, but can use fresh American Tax Dollars to buy his explosives with. Israel has also been forced to reduce its defenses. NOTHING else has changed. The Arabs still try to kill people every day, but now we call the attacks hudna, and are suppose to ignore them and celebrate the victory of Bushs peace process. Sorry, but any way you look at it, the Emperor has no clothes...
Really ? my naivete ? Who is it glaring at ? I'll tell it to stop.
They might put pressure on the WH to put pressure on Israel to kill the terrorists.
No, that would be Iraq.
The hudna is a method by which Abbas can remain in nominal power and avoid killing the terrorists.
The only reasonable method for removing Palestinian terrorists is to enlist Jordanian and Egyptian special forces in the operations. It would take a major effort and realignment of forces to forge that kind of alliance.
Did I leave anything out ?
Oh, yeah, Yemen and Saudi Arabia. That can wait.
Sounds good--well, except that Jordan is about 60% Palestinian and that King Abdullah's wife is Palestinian, so it might not go over so well at home & the King may end sleeping on the couch. As for Egypt, they'd toss Mubarak outta there if he came in the side of the Israelis because a Muslim country doesn't attack another Muslim country (the Iran-Iraq war doesn't count).
Invasion of Syria, Lebanon, and Iran
Fine by me & as long as we're in the neighborhood.... Iran may implode shortly, but I'm tired of waiting for that to happen.
New Palestinian st.... (Nah, I can't say it)
The "new Palestinian state" is defined by the Palestinians as "Israel" as in "from the River to the Sea."
Invasion of North Korea
IF we've got the personnel. But NK likes to huff & puff in the most bellicose way, just trying to get us to pay attention to them. Let's see how this one plays out now that NK has agreed to talks. Well, that was a couple days ago & NK has probably changed its mind since then.
If a world war breaks out it won't matter. Until then the diplomats are in charge.
