Bob Hope should be remembered especially for two things:

He was the greatest all-around entertainer of the 20th century. Hope could do it all--stage, screen, radio, television, sing, dance, you name it. And his comic timing and delivery were unsurpassed.

Up until his death, Bob Hope was one of the two greatest living Americans (Ronald Reagan being the other). What a patriot! What untiring service to his country!

But he is perhaps best remembered for his untiring work entertaining U.S. troops overseas. It was a tour of personal duty that lasted from World War II until the first Gulf War and took him some 10 million kilometers all over the world.

Hope earned a fortune and gave generously to charity. He received so many awards he had to rent a warehouse to store them.

Born in England, Hope emigrated to the United States when he was a child. He once quipped he "was English. My family was too poor to be British." He worked at several jobs including golf caddy and boxer - joking "I've been on more canvases than Picasso" - before turning to show business.

In 1934 he married Dolores, his companion till his death. The couple adopted and raised four children.

A master of one-liners, he recently answered the question "Who would want to live to be a 100?" with "Anybody who's 99."

To honor his 100th birthday, Hollywood declared Bob Hope its citizen of the century.

It is truly the end of an era. Bob was truly a gentleman, a role model, and a patriot.

I think what was so special about the FOXNews Hope Tribute...there was no narrator...just fabulous clips...we could just watch, with great affection. I didn't know till this morning that one of Bob Hope's favorite USO sidekicks, Jerry Colonna, lost a son in World War II.

My husband had 2 Viet Nam tours...he got to see Vicki Carr..(I think he's in love with her to this day), but he didn't get to see Bob Hope. That didn't matter, we loved him, and this house never missed a Bob Hope Special.

Seriously though, only someone who's seen him while far from home can truly appreciate the impact that man had for MILLIONS of American servicemen (and women).

I never saw him live, but when I was in AFROTC field traing at Vandenberg in '71, they would show us flim clips from his shows, along with his ladies of course, to help break up long lecture classes. We weren't all that far from home, some less than others, but still for many it was the first time away from familiy for any extened period. And we definitely appreaciated both Hope and the ladies. Never thought to ask my Dad if he'd seen him during WW-II, but it's certainly possible that he, or one of my Uncles, did.
