Mutinous Philippine soldiers surrender after seizing Manila shopping center

Mutinous troops who seized a Manila shopping and apartment complex demanding the government resign ended a 19-hour standoff late Sunday and returned to barracks without a shot fired.

President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo announced the crisis was over in a televised address, as experts defused explosives the mutineers had rigged up inside the financial district's Glorietta complex.

Shopping center? Don't coup attempts happen at Presidential Palaces or radio stations? Guess times are changing.

Thanks for the confermation. I had to read the article a 2nd time to see what I was missing. I guess I didn't miss anything. Just poorly presented.

Who knows? Maybe they were just bored and decided to go for a Sunday afternoon stroll and coup attempt. This sort of things from various groups of "mutinious Philippine soldiers" have been going on with some regularity for the last 50 years.

I just arrived in the Phlippines on Sunday morning for my Peace Corps assignment about two hours before the stand off began. Thankfully it was resolved peacefully.
