Duncan of Fairfax, Va., wants my thoughts on Rush Limbaugh being added to ESPN's Sunday NFL Countdown. "Personally, I'm getting ready to break out the pitchfork and find me a couple of torches," he writes, "but I suppose I'll have to make do with just not watching the show." Careful about hints of terrorism, Dunc. Not only the FBI, but the Justice Department monitors columns such as these for any hints of terrorist threats. To say nothing of the Department of Agriculture and the Attorney General's Office, which is exactly what I'd like to say about them.
Not that I don't agree with everything you've said. I most certainly do.
It's funny, on Thursday afternoon I did an interview on ESPN Radio, only because I wanted to present my Limbaugh views right up front. So I ranted and raved for a while about how ABC set the idiot-tone with its Dennis Miller venture.
But Miller, while being a football ignoramus, at least wasn't mean, in direct contrast to this Limbaugh character, who's not only stupid and nasty, but stupid and nasty at the top of his voice.
The pity of it is that I used to enjoy watching Countdown, but of course I won't tune in anymore. And what do you think the radio guy said? Right on cue he came in with, "See that, we're all talking about him." To which I retorted that we talk about murderers, too, and thugs and all manner of aberrant behavior, which doesn't mean that we want to include it as expert commentary on the football scene. I hope to God this is the last reference to Limbaugh that I'll have to make.

I never really liked this dweeb's schtick. I guess my gut instinct was right.

I still remember Sports Illustrated blowing a gasket over NY Giants TE Mark Bavaro being involved in an anti-abortion film. Given that SI had frequently defended other sports figures who took on political issues, it seemed a bit strange. Except those political figures had adopted politically correct positions. Bavaro had opposed the high sacrament of liberalism, so he was to be portrayed as being out of line.
Just more typical East Coast media left-wing idiocy.

Dennis Miller had a nasty persona before going onto Monday Night Football. He set it aside and talked, albeit forced and pedantic, football. Rush will do the same, without resorting to restoration comedy.

I remember some bitter criticism about a Yankee pitcher who dared to make some religious commercials.........they blamed his poor pitching outing on the fact that he had been making those commercials.......
Those liberal liberals.......feh!

When people write this kind of garbage they only show what liars they are and how biased they are. This dope is just parroting the liberal line. It is obvious he never listened to Rush at all.
One of Rush's great charms is that is is ALWAYS polite and respectful. The worst he does is cut people off in frustration. And he never yells.
Whenever I hear people talking about how "rude" Rush is, or how he yells, or calls people names, or such, I always know they never listened to him and are just repeating talking points they heard other people say.

Miller knew more about football than anyone could have guessed.

Heck I still remember SI having this article about global warming. I guess they were afraid global warming would shorten hockey season.

Nothing can shorten hockey season. I predict within a few years the playoffs will start conflicting with the following season.

Dr. Z's articles are almost as bad as his oral hygeine. Has anyone ever seen those foul, disgusting, brown, rotten things?

this Limbaugh character, who's not only stupid and nasty, but stupid and nasty at the top of his voice. He obviously hasn't listened to the show. IMO at least half the people who criticize Rush haven't.

This idiot 'Z' couldn't carry Rushs' jock strap.
It's amazing how liberals just have no class at all, and they never seem to know what they're talking about.

Exactly. As a pretty rabid sports fan, I've had the dismay of seeing sports journalism go further and more militantly left. It's been said that sports journalists are the last refuge of leftist media hacks. Most are unathletic weenies who, having grown up being picked last, either spend their careers sycophantically drooling over pro athletes or using the guise of sports to spread their warped worldview.
To: KevinDavis
Gee, I remember reading SI when it wrote about sports and the athlete. That was in the days when the game mattered... not the salary struggles, the spousal abuse, the obnoxious attitudes. Ah, and they say the 70's sucked!
Speaking of which.... remember when SportsCenter would actually go from commercial to commercial without beat thumping, ear splitting music (aka NOISE)... and hip phrasology?

here is how a child responds when he's upset: "he's stupid and mean".
now here's how grown liberals act when they're upset "he's stupid and nasty".
an important realization is that liberals are to be treated like children because they are at that mental age. talk to them in the tone that "when they grow up and can participate in adult dialogue, you'll dignify their comments, but not until then". never take their infantile name-calling seriously. patronizing them usually has hilarious results, with them getting angrier and making even bigger fools of themselves.
To: paul in cape
Here's my e-mail to the (senile) dr. z:
Have you ever noticed how children, when they get upset, can rarely intellectualize their anger? With their undeveloped mental faculties they usually say something like "Jimmy is 'stupid and nasty'". And yet there are some adults, I'm not naming names, who likely suffer from a kind of arrested development and never learn how to critique in an informed, adult manner. Adults with the mind of children. It's a sad thing to see. Especially when they're too old to change. Look forward to your future "insightful" criticisms of Rush, old man.

Paul Z. had his CNN/SI tv image yanked out from under him when the whole net went tango uniform.

Just for the record---you know, before anyone starts deluging ESPN with emails and such---Paul Zimmerman works for Sports Illustrated and has for many, many years.
Not sure where the ESPN comes in here.
DR Z does suck, by the way. Never gives my Saints any credit...
