Good Bye, Mr. (Collin) McMillan, and Thank You

In 2000, I had the wonderful opportunity to run for the State House of Representatives in New Mexico. I was a no-name Pubby running for a seat that had not been challenged by a Pubby in nearly 26 years, and in a District that was 66% Democrat and 24% Republican. Needless to say, my chances were slim to none. Nonetheless, I made the run because I care about the people in the District.

During my run, I met & had lunch with Collin McMillan on a number of occassions. On one occassion, Mr. McMillan offered some words of encouragement. He related the story of a no-name Pubby seeking office in a then Democrat heavy District. He ran a write in campaign, and campaigned extremely hard. In the end, his work & dedication to the issues paid off. That person was the Honorable Congressman Joe Skeen (R-NM)

Collin McMillan's words of encouragement stayed with me throughout the campaign. When I would begin feeling bogged down by the bleak outlook on my own campaign, McMillan's encouragement would always come back to me.

I lost the race, but walked away with an experience of a lifetime. I will always remember the folks that I had the opportunity to meet, particularly Mr. McMillan.

Thank you, sir. You will be remembered by me and the many people like me whose lives you touched.
