[history]
A fair amount of attention, although not necessarily the attention one would seek, attends the production of ''The Passion,'' Mel Gibson's movie about the last days of Jesus Christ. Making a movie about Christ is a surefire path to instant publicity, most of it negative. And when one of the most bankable stars in the English-speaking world is backing the project, you can bet Christ won't go quietly this time.

Sorry for the duplicate No prob -- I'm seeing it for the first time as I'm sure a lot of other folks are.
The writer just doesn't get it.

Many of us are awed by the figurative beauty of a story that created a system of values and beliefs that has survived for 2,000 years He may go to Church, but this guy doesn't sound like a "Christian" to me.

"What these people don't understand, what Mel Gibson and his ilk don't understand, is that the literal truth of Jesus' story isn't what animates Christian belief..."
Yes, it is. This is another, ~Christ is love and that is all this is about~ ideology.
That whole bloody sacrifice foretold throughout the Bible, especially in Isaiah and culminating in the Crucifixion is a lot of truth about salvation, redemption, love, sacrifice, triumph, and judgment. It is quite literal.

What these people don't understand, what Mel Gibson and his ilk don't understand, is that the literal truth of Jesus' story isn't what animates Christian belief. Many of us are awed by the figurative beauty of the storyIf figurative beauty is what attracted people then every good poet would be a g-d. Speaking for myself it is the truth in God's word that I seek.

In a recent interview with The New York Times, Gibson pere observed that the reformist Vatican II council was ''a Masonic plot backed by the Jews.''

The Jesus Seminar, loaded with great "theologians" like Paul Verhoeven(director of the inspirational motion pictures BASIC INSTINCT and SHOWGIRLS), is nothing more than a group of oversexed middle aged men who want to be able to keep on living in whatever lifestyle they see fit, and the Jesus of the New Testament and Christian Tradition is a big party pooper to their way of living.
I'm sure the author of this article is of the same ilk. Can't keep cheating on the wife or going to "gentlemans clubs" if the real Jesus is the one who said that you can only get into Heaven by entering the Narrow Gate.

Don't feel bad for posting a duplicate. The search engine for FR needs serious work.

The guy thinks the Jesus Seminar is more reliable than the eyewitness accounts. Read the Gospels; they are historical narratives. The disciples, save John, died martyrs. All for a fable? Me thinks not.

As for the Masonic part, Archbishop Annibale Bugnini was the architect of many of the biggest changes that came with Vatican II, and he is widely believe to have been a Freemason.

From the "Jesus Siminar's" web site:
The Seminar's research is measured by democratic rather than elitist methods. They will be surprised to find that Heaven is exclusive and not a democracy.

The Passion,'' like so many movies about Christ, flirts with absurdity
I think I've read enough of this article...
To: Dirk McQuickly
This guy is really full of it. And, it really doesn't matter what he thinks, because this movie will become a hit due to word of mouth. Something these crackpot critics fortunately have no control over.
