Now that looks good. Thanks. I'm taking apart my really really really old first computer and trying to find all the paperwork and tomorrow it goes to the Salvation Army or the Boys and Girls Club. Somebody can get use out of it.

Not sure what it is about the late night ponderings of my old mind, but it seems the darker side of my memories rise to the top. This was written more then 20 years ago, and its still as real today. Let us remember the Veterans, old and new, for they pay a long hard price for their service to their country. No matter their age, ALL veterans are my heros.

Draft Dodgers Wonder, Veterans Remember
copyright, 1980

A young man came home with war behind his eyes,
the sounds of eternal violence still echoed in his ears.
He wanted only to leave it far behind, as time began to fly,
but the Fates decreed otherwise, and so they shaped his fears.

Over the aging of the young man into an older echo of himself,
the man remembers each moment engraven on his soul.
In silent memory does he live them yet again in the theater of oneself,
replaying the moments like bitter film clips of that remembered hellhole.

Never speaking of those times, for its hard to explain to one who was never there,
they have no frame of reference to measure the limits of your internal hell.
In silent reflection does one travel across the battlefield of the mind with care,
avoiding the hidden terrors like landmines, in that landscape so starkly fell.

He sees the smallest sparrow when it falls, and marks the moment when a tattered soul comes home to be made whole. We in America must never let the left remove God, for He is the final home for every soldier, sailor, airman or Marine. Those who serve are never forgotten by God, and will in the end, be given true honor, in His forgiving love.

Going Home
copyright 2003

The battle started in the misty light of false dawn,
shattering shells ripped the earth like hellish plows.
Each shredding earth and men, and nearly all dead-on,
it seemed Hell had come to earth, and reigned here now.

It was in such a moment that a single screaming shell,
exploded on the walls of the war torn town.
A soldier fell from shrapnel’s tear, the pain began to tell,
he screamed the cry of a soul in fear, as he staggered and fell down.

The war moved on, the fight did surge to other parts of town,
but he lay there in helpless pose against the shattered wall.
Pain, oh the pain of the torn body brought him around,
and cries of agony fell from his lips, as he awaited Death’s call.

Alone in the rubble, and knowing the end was near,
he cried out, Oh God, I am done for, please watch over my heart’s domain.
Doubling over in that moment, he felt as ageless as forever there,
thinking only of the loved ones he would never see again.

In that moment a light fell all around, and the pain flowed far away,
and the wounded man looked up to see a stranger standing there.
His eyes were filled with all the peace the world could ever know I’d say,
and somehow the soldier knew he was no danger to him, as He bent to pray.

The soldier heard the words and found an echo in his heart then,
and the stranger touched the wounded man and spoke with voice so soft.
Its time to come home now, for you the war is done my friend,
and the soldier stood with the greatest ease, feeling his spirit loft.

Looking down he saw the husk of the man he once had been, torn from every limb,
and looked at himself standing there and saw the spirit that had been within.
The stranger smiled and led the way, and the soldier turned to go with Him,
home to where the Maker waits to accept each torn spirit, and with love to finally mend.
