Bill Simon just announced on the Hugh Hewitt show that the Secretary of State's office have contacted his people and told them that over 900,000 signatures have been validated. This would mean that if the Sec. of State announces the certification tomorrow, Lt. Gov. Cruz Bustamante would have 15 days to announce the special election which would be held 60-80 days after that. Candidates could have as little a 24 hours to get their paperwork in once the election date is set.

Oh, I wake up every morning unemployed till I find my first new client and that doesn't happen everyday as I have to sift through a lot of non-serious folks to find the ones that work well with professionals. You know how it is, right?
I don't think the little Davis lover quite understands that keeping our day job in a very real sense is what the recall effort is all about.
Those of us who love California, and indeed 52 counties out of 58 are for the most part sanely populated, don't want to see it get any worse. Those people who want the situation to get worse so they can blame the dumbocraps even more are like someone who has little skin cancer and won't treat it because it's cancer and they want to give up because fighting it would take effort.
A concerted effort with the right Republican candidate would do wonders for the state of the state. We need an experienced pol with integrity who won't lose it when the arrows and the mud start flying, as they inevitably will. You'll know right off who the dumbs fear most, that person will be vilified by the media.
I want to see someone with fiscal responsibility who won't resort to screwing the average Joe or small business owner. I want to see someone who is pro-commerce and who will help those of us who want to build a business and create jobs for American citizens.
I voted for Simon in 2002 because to me he was clearly the best man on the ballot. If he runs again I would hope that he applies the lessons he learned. Riordan, never! Issa, thanks for helping the recall effort but he's way too close to the islamic bloc that wants a return the days of Turkish imperialism of the late 17th century.
Here's my criteria for a Republican candidate:
1. Solid success in business achieved honestly and ethically.
2. Significant experience in campaigning for and winning public office - no amateurs.
3. Must be charismatic, cool head when the heat is on, and able to promote a positive attitude.

No matter how "professional" a candidate is, or how good the professional consultants he/she hires may be, it's the amateur Independent Expenditure Committees that cannot coordinate in ANY way with a candidate's "Controlled Committee" or the candidate's consultants whatsoever that often causes the "stupid" problems.(happened in my last campaign)
Jesse Ventura and a few others who've come to power with no prior experience would not agree with number 2., either.

SoS will certify that the recall has qualified. He could make the announcement as early as Thursday.

Questions:
1. Deadline for Candidates to File their papers?

WHEN does the "24 hours" Start? When the SoS announces certification (maybe on Thursday); OR, is it when the Lt. Gov. announces the election date?
2. What is the Process to file? Does it take money / filing fees; or petition signatures to get on the recall ballot? How much, how many? AND, they are only going to have 24 hours?
3. Question about voting the Recall Ballot: If a person votes "NO" on the recall, do they get to vote for a possible replacement? : Answer by FR's dpwiener:

First the relevent documents:
CALIFORNIA CONSTITUTION ARTICLE 2 SEC. 15. (a) An election to determine whether to recall an officer and, if appropriate, to elect a successor shall be called by the Governor and held not less than 60 days nor more than 80 days from the date of certification of sufficient signatures.
State Election Code: Section 11381. Nominations of candidates to succeed the recalled officer shall be made in the manner prescribed for nominating a candidate to that office in a regular election insofar as that procedure is consistent with this article. The following exceptions shall be made to that procedure: (a) For recalls of state officers, the nomination papers and the declaration of candidacy shall, in each case, be filed no less than 59 days prior to the date of the election and not before the day the order of the election is issued. The Secretary of State shall certify the names of the candidates to be placed on the ballot by the 55th day prior to the election.
So, taken together, if the election is called to be 60 days from the date of certification (the minimum in the election code), the candidates must have their paperwork in within 1 day (60 days - 59 days = 1 day).
REad up on the History of initiatives, referendums and recalls. They are the people's only and last resort when govt or bureaucracies are neitehr responsive nor responsible in their their actions, but rather attempt to enslave those who pay their salaries to policies that do not serve the public well at all.

Whoa! Only the "Yes" on recall people get to vote in the recall election? Is this right?
I banged my head on this one for a bit as well. Why let a person who is already voting to keep Davis, a chance to pick his replacement as well? but, this is the way the law works. Got to trust Hiram on this one. ;-) A lot of No voters won't bother to select a replacement candidate anyway.
That's one of the reasons the Democrats and the unions are so terrified of a special election. They know that anti-Davis voters (especially Republicans and Independents, but also minor party members and some Democrats) will be highly motivated to get to the polls. Whereas the majority of Democrats will be depressed and uninterested in trying to rescue Davis, so their turnout will be quite low. Add to that an expected dropoff of 8% to 10% from the recall question to the replacement question, and even a prominent Democratic candidate would have a tough time beating whomever emerges as the leading Republican.
This special election neutralizes the Democrats' normal edge in voter registration in California. Only Feinstein would be an odds-on favorite to retain the governorship for Democrats.
