Restoration of PATH Service to WTC Site
HudsonCity.net ^ | July 2003

Work to restore PATH service to Downtown Manhattan is ahead of schedule with resumption of train service to a new temporary passenger terminal at the World Trade Center site expected in November.

The PATH Terminal at the World Trade Center served some 67,000 passengers per day when it was destroyed in the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. With resumption of PATH service to Downtown Manhattan as its top priority, the Port Authority forged a unique partnership that allowed contractors to order materials and mobilize for construction even as engineers were completing design work. This collaborative approach, coupled with non-traditional sequencing of tunnel work and track installation, promises train service to the World Trade Center site will begin fully a month ahead of the original end of December 2003 goal.

The World Trade Center attack killed 3,000. If it had happened two hours later it could have been 50,000.

Never forget.

That's a scary picture, I hadn't seen one before.

Thanks for this post, the PATH really has been excellent throught this whole horrible episode. Years ago, I used to pass through that station every day, just about the time of the first attack.

I am anxiously awaiting the reopening of the "city-side" station, and again, I salute the PATH for all the good they've done. They didn't lose a single person that day, their quick response can be credited for that.

I was on PATH today and noticed that they had reopened Exchange Place in Jersey City.

Last year, one of my customers who is a senior exec with PATH was explaining to me that after 911 they put six foot thick concrete plugs, the widtth of the tunnels to prevent flooding and shore up the structures against collapse. They thought it might take as many as three years to repair the damage. They did it in less than two.

Say what you want about Port Authority...but these people more than rose to the occasion

Interesting... I was in that station the morning of 9/11 before the attacks. Haven't been back there since obviously. Would be kind of eerie for me now I think. Luckily I don't work in Jersey City anymore though either. ;-)

Yeah, but did you here that they're going to shelve the rail link to LaGuardia in order to complete a "mass transit center" downtown? THAT IS STUPID, as most business has shifted midtown anyway. Thank you Schmuck Chumer for pushing for federal matching funds for that boondoggle.

you want another monorail to LaGuardia? That monorail to JFK is going to be a huge white elephant, no one will use it, and they destroyed the Van Wyck to build it.

We need a high speed train from midtown straight to the airport instead of the monorail. I'm sick of sitting in traffic by using some overpriced "car service." More people (especially from overseas, where trains from the airport are par for the course) would use such a system than some "mass transit center" to an antiquated downtown.

BTW: The ONLY memorial we need is a simple plaque or fountain, much like that to those killed on the General Slocum, that you can find in Tompkins Square.

The post-9/11 pics of the PATH station always give me the creeps, as I used that station often and was in it less than a month before the attacks.

I beg to differ. If they include a link to Hoboken or Jersey City, I'd be thrilled. I absolutely HATE driving to those airports.

No way to do it -- it's just a "toonerville trolley" between the Jamaica LIRR station and JFK -- it's absolutely moronic.
