Sydney, Australia (CNN) -- Ever wanted to wish upon a star? Well, you have 70,000 million million million to choose from.
That's the total number of stars in the known universe, according to a study by Australian astronomers.
It's also about 10 times as many stars as grains of sand on all the world's beaches and deserts.

Oh, and be sure to get a star named after you! We'll enter it in the "International Star Registry"! Only $49.95!

Hmmm, lot smaller than I thought. Of course, this is only the "observable" universe, which is as far as our radio/optical sensors can detect.

Does this take into effect that the stars they are seeing right now are billions of years older because of the time needed for light to travel and may have burned up, out or in?

I watched a program on tv about space. Someone had the idea of taking a picture in the darkest part of the night sky. You could see all the bright stars, about 2000. The point the narrator was making as the camera zoomed in on the picture was that these were not stars, but galaxies!!

Carl is dead. What does he know. Well, I suspect that he is no longer an atheist.

It's also about 10 times as many stars as grains of sand on all the world's beaches and deserts. Just so we know what that looks like:
70,000,000,000,000,000,000,000
Wow. That's a lot of stars.

This is the same order of magnitude for the number of stars that has been estimated on a theoretical basis for many decades. The figure I always heard was 100 billion galaxies with about 100 billion stars each.

We all live in a 70 zetastar universe. Or 70 Z-star universe. That means we each get 100 trillion stars.

Just so we know what that looks like: 70,000,000,000,000,000,000,000The National Debt is $6,731,344,647,343.95
That's still quite a bit smaller than the number of stars in the universe,
But I bet Congress will surpass that amount within 20 years.

And curiously, we are the only intelligent life form among all those stellar systems.
