One of our local schools is taking the same approach. Their discipline problems have devolved to table etiquette. I've often said that the best way to raise and teach a child is to explain how what they are learning relates to them. If you teach them early their place in American society, they are more inclined to participate in their own education. It gives them a foundation for their knowledge.
You have to give them a reason to strive.
