Actually, you may get a kick out of how my thinking evolved on this. I was watching television and this favorite show of mine "Choppers" was on the Discovery channel. And I was like this is what is left of the best of America. Small businesses--Dad and son, mom and pop operations.

I know now that when I hear Rush on the radio attack labor, or defend big business concerns like the radio consolidations I feel disgust in my gut.

Labor then management failed America in the 60s and 70s, and now finance has failed America in the 80s and 90s. Just give me the small business man any day.

The need to bring manufacturing back to America is a national security item for me. In the meantime only skilled blue collar labor like plumbers and mechanics and small business owners will be able to make a go of it with the rest of the population possessing no different marketable skill that a cheap worker can provide.

Small businesses--Dad and son, mom and pop operations.

Add to that "that do specialized operations for a limited audience." The market for the West Coast Choppers isn't huge, and their bikes cost a lot of money. Big business can't break into it as the owners of the bike want a relationship with the bike maker. Plus how are you going to offshore making a spider web wheel cover? There isn't money for the big boys in one offs.
So if you're not doing something on a grand scale your job should be safe. That's good and bad: it makes the artist more valuable (the Chopper guys won't hire any yahoo to paint their bikes), but it means that you can't "dream big" and start up a new product line.
