While we're on the subject of rights, a repost of Chodorov's excellent essay seems in order. This man's writing is a model of clarity and logic. Which means, of course, that it's wasted on liberals.
I think the Socialist argument might be: there are no such things as "rights" as such, might makes right, government is most powerful because power flows from the barrel of the gun and the government has (or should have) the guns, ergo the government grants the "rights".
Does that about sum it up? In this model, there are no rights "granted" to the government by individuals, the government just takes what it wants (it has the might), and may grant some of those rights to those who suck up to it.
