Pennsylvanians saw a light at the end of the tunnel as the 2002-03 fiscal year came to a close on June 30. Last week, Gov. Ed Rendell and Democrats across the state, who for the last five months have beat their war drums to the tune of increased taxes, suddenly fell silent.

Revenue collections expected for the 2002-03 fiscal year far exceeded expectations, totaling 21 .3 billion--a mere $500 million shortfall below the official estimate, and $235 million less than Gov. Rendell's exaggerated shortfall projection estimated at $735.8 million.

Since when does a rat need the truth to justify a tax increase?

Chrysler Corporation was to add a new car to it's line to honor Bill Clinton. The Dodge Drafter was to begin production in Canada this year, but the car had to be pulled out of production when initial tests showed that the little white lines on the road kept disappearing all the time.

That 6% sales tax started out as a luxury tax. Now you pay it on everything, even toilet paper.
No wonder so many folks go to Delaware to shop!

I wouldn't be surprised if Pa. would get more revenue with a 3 percent sales tax than with the 6 percent tax.

We'd do well to remove/lower the sales tax from mid-priced items like appliances, electronics, etc. I think that is most of the types of items people go to Delaware for.

You can't go out of state and avoid sales tax for cars, planes, boats, mattresses and furniture (at least by delivery), etc., and there is no tax on clothing. And I doubt many people go out of state for books or trinkets.

You make good points. I wonder what percentage of the tax revenue comes from $100 and up stuff that fits in a trunk.
