Dallas County jurors convicted 19-year-old Sarah Foust of murder in the hit-and-run death of an Irving waitress.

Ms. Foust faces five to 99 years in prison. Testimony in the punishment phase of the trial will begin Monday.

Ms. Foust testified Thursday that she didn't realize that waitress Jennifer Sanchez, 20, was on top of the Chevrolet Nova as she sped out of a Bennigan's parking lot in Irving early in the morning of Jan. 3. Ms. Sanchez had been trying to get the car's license plate number when she was struck.

"My intentions were to get to the room, the motel, I never meant to hurt her ... I was drunk from the minute I left the room. No that's not an excuse, and I know that," Ms. Foust said.

Ms. Sanchez fell off the car as it veered sharply. She died from head injuries later that morning.

Prosecutors Keith Robinson and Howard Blackmon told jurors that Ms. Foust's actions amounted to murder because testimony showed that Ms. Foust knew Ms. Sanchez was clinging to the top of the car as she tried to get away.

Defense attorney David Scoggins had argued that his client is guilty of manslaughter by her reckless actions, but that she did not intend to harm or kill the waitress.

The other three with Ms. Foust that night -- Kortnie Henson, David Thornton and Michael Prewitt -- face charges of theft of service.

I don't think looks enter the equation. The real point is that a person has ended a life and ruined her own. Accountability is being served. Hopefully other young people will see this and not make the same mistake.

Thanks for the update. Let's hope she gets closer to the 99 years rather than a slap on the wrist. Can't see Texas letting her get off very lightly though. Perhaps not a gruesome as Mallard but just as sickening so deserves the same punishment.
