Acrophobia, fear of heights? Normal. Claustrophobia, fear of confined spaces? Also mormal. Aviophobia, fear of flying? You bet. Crustyophobia, fear of Hillary? Oh yeah.

You forgot aibohphobia...the morbid fear of palindromes, and the only diagnosis which causes the syndrome it describes.

I have 3 pretty bad phobias.. one of lightening, of tornados, and of vomiting(that's the weird one)

Karaunophobia or Brontophobia- fear of lightning and thunder.

Lilapsophobia- fear of tornadoes.

Emetophobia- fear of vomiting. [also: Aeronausiphobia- vomiting secondary to airsickness.]

If you're going to be afraid, at least do it properly and know the names!

Virtual lightening doesn't bother me too much. ;) But if there is a storm outside I'm iffy about even going to the bathroom.. it's my nanny's fault. When I was little she told me a story about someone who died during a thunderstorm going potty because lightening hit the plumbing or somesuch. And you can forget getting me outside or near a window. I'm trying hard not to pass my fear on to my kids but if a storm gets too bad and hubby isn't home I'll have a panic attack. Sooooo if I know bad stuff is coming I try not to be home alone. If it creeps up on me and it's extremely bad weather, I will sometimes call hubby home from work. If there is a tornado warning, you'll find me either at my parents house in there storm shelter if I can get there before the storm gets here(5 minutes away) or in my bathtub. We live in north GA so we do occationally have some really bad storms.

I hear you loud and clear, hon.

When I was little, I had a ventriloquist dummy. It was OK at first, but after I while, I started getting creeped out. It kept smiling at me. And not the good kind of smile. The kind of smile you give to a rottweiler just before you konk it out with a rock. I became scared and barried it -- face down -- in the bottom of my closet. However, that only made me more scared because now (in my yound mind) it had reason to attack me. I actually had nightmares about it: It would come out of the closet and try to kill me, but I would force it back in and put it back in the closet, then try and hide in my bed, but it would come out of nowhere and try to rip the covers off and kill me again--and not once did that smile go away. What a nightmare. *whoo*

I understand the lightning. It's normal, too. Lots of people -- adult people -- are scared by lightning. Perfectly normal. My case is probably one of those that you don't see every day. Yet another reason why I am special. (to a shrink, yeah...)

Well, I have a fear of puking that's just as bad and very irrational. I have no idea where it even came from. It was horrifying when I had morning sickness with both kids so bad. Facing the fear that way did nothing to make it go away either. I'll still have a total breakdown if I think I'm going to puke. I even have some Rx anti-emetic meds I saved from my last pregnancy that I'll use to prevent throwing up if i think it might be a possibility. Atleast I don't ever have to worry about being bulemic! It did cause me to be anorexic though for a while when I was young. I've learned though to put the thought out of my mind for the most part but every so often it creeps back up. My worst fear scenario was puking while driving and it causing me to have an accident. My imagination gets the better of me sometimes.

Seriously though, I don't think it's all that irrational. I mean, there are lots of people scared of vomitting, I bet. Now, how may people do you know are afraid of, eh, objects to the right side of the body? Hmm?
