US deports Lebanese man after 19 months in prison

The Bureau of Immigration and Customs Enforcement in the US Department of Homeland Security said Tuesday it had deported Rabih Haddad to Lebanon after 19 months in prison. Haddad, 43, was the co-founder of the Islamic charity Global Relief Foundation, which the US government believed was channelling money to Al-Qaeda. Neither Haddad nor his charity were formally accused of any terrorism-related crime.

After arriving at Beirut International Airport, Haddad was questioned by local authorities and released Wednesday. A judicial source said it was clear Haddad had no ties to Al-Qaeda, as he would not have been released if there were evidence linking him to the terrorist network. The source added that Haddad was deported as his US residency permit had expired and the authorities there did not wish to renew it as he was an Arab Muslim.

Haddad’s wife, Salma al-Rushaid, and three of their four children were ordered to leave the US in November, when a court denied their application for asylum. The fourth child was born in the US. They were accused of overstaying their visas, but only Haddad was jailed.

Rushaid, in her Ann Arbor home Tuesday evening, said she first heard of her husband’s deportation when he called her collect from Amsterdam that morning. She added neither she nor her attorney were informed that her husband was to be released from jail and deported.

If it weren't for Salma and the kids proudly ignoring the deportation order, I'd say this would be a cause for optimism.  I'd like to see H/S show up to her house with a net, wrap her and the kiddies up and haul them back to Lebanon.  We've got more arab mooslimbs than we can safely monitor as it is...
