I of course do not agree, as a Jew. The Jewish religion teaches you that if someone is coming to kill you, you kill him first. There is a difference between murder and killing. In the Torah, it states "Thou shall not MURDER" not "Kill" as the Christian bible states. Nevertheless, I believe we should pray for the soldiers no matter what you believe, as without them, you would not be allowed to practice your religion.

No, no.
We NEVER stop praying for soldiers or elected officials, regardless of our opinions.
Aside from that, this conflict does in many ways fit the Just War Doctrine, no matter how much the liberal cardinals didn't want it to.

"The Catechism says that we can only fight a war that is just," he said. "So far, no one has been able to tell me that this is a just war.Well, Mr. Garcia, the Bible says that "There are none so blind as those who will not see." Maybe the fact, Mr. Garcia, that you cannot see the justness of this war is more due to the fact that your moral compass is broken.

Garcia said. "They just see that I am one person with a sign. I don't represent a group. I am just one crazy man in a million." He can't be too crazy... it hit the nail on the head with that statement.
To: yonif
Garcia is an idiot who has absolutely no idea what the Catholic Church teaches.
The Christian Gospel and the Catechism of the Catholic Church both teach that we should pray for our enemies even when they are sinning against us.
If we are commanded to pray for the souls of our enemies, how much more should we pray as well for our own soldiers, whether we agree with them or not.
Garcia is a sick and evil man.

Actually, the Christian bible says "thou shalt not commit murder', too, though some helpful soul (/sarcasm) translated "commit murder" to "kill".
Jesus also said, paraphrased: "For each of you who does not own a sword sell your cloak and buy one."
Neither God nor his son has ever meant for us not to defend ourselves. When someone says "What about turning the other cheek?" remember that the count stops at two cheeks. (or four, if you insist.)

"Christian theologian St. Thomas Aquinas defined a just war as an act of aggression that serves a greater good and protects the safety of a nation and its people." What does this asshole think 911 was?

Gonzalez said that when her son was recruited to West Point on a football scholarship his senior year at Moody High School and even after his graduation from the top military school in 2001, the farthest thing from both their minds was the possibility that he would ever have to go off to war. I'm sick of stupid people.

"War is always a sign of failure and should always be the last resort," he said.
They keep blathering stuff like that but they don't believe it themselves as we went to war with Saddam after everything was tried to get him to follow the UN resolutions for about 12 years. Facts in this instance show that for people like him war is NEVER the solution. He can march all he wants; he's a hypocrite. How about these banalities such as after all these wars the world is still not a safe place, or something to that effect! It's easy for him to say that when he is free to be an idiot without being thrown in jail. I'd like him to live under a murderous regime such as Saddam's or Mugabe's and see if within a few days he wouldn't start praying for the US or the devil himself to come free him from his bondage. There are fewer things more repulsive than a free people denying the need of freedom to others.

Alternative headline:
Catholic Bishop Affirms Committment to Pray for US Troops
It's just as descriptive of the story, and more descriptive of the Catholic Church. But no, they center on a self-admitted nutburger.

"The Catechism says that we can only fight a war that is just," he said. "So far, no one has been able to tell me that this is a just war. Maybe the Catholic church should actively pray that this gentleman gets a clue. All things are possible.

"So far, no one has been able to tell me that this is a just war. By asking us to pray for soldiers, we are saying we support what they are doing. We hear all this talk about how they are heroes, but we never mention that they are over there killing people."You've been told, Joel, you just don't want to listen. I doubt Garcia would understand nuclear fission if was explained to him either. Tis folly to be wise when ignorance is bliss especially when parroting an agenda.

Why is this non-story even considered newsworthy?

Just when you start to think that the priests and bishops are alone in dragging this institution into the pits of hell, the laity steps in a grabs the hold of the ropes too.

He's a whiny idealist with an anti-war axe to grind under the cover of Christian principle.
Maybe OPie would like to dissect this one. He's probably FR's resident Just War expert.

In the Torah, it states "Thou shall not MURDER" not "Kill" as the Christian bible states. I am under the impression that historically "Thou shalt not kill" was understood the Jewish way by most Christians (despite the ambiguous translation). Some pacifist sects were an exception, and liberal Christians are beoming an exception.
I am Jewish, BTW.

Some people just don't get it. Is Iraq safer now than it was last year? Is the Middle East safer now that we are there than it was last year? Is America safer now that we are in Iraq than last year? And is the world a safer place without Saddass in power? Now if you answered yes to all those questions you get it. If you missed any one of them I suggest you fly over to Syria and get off the plane and see how long you last. It's not rocket science folks. Every forty or fifty years you have to take out the trash. And when it absolutely, positively has to be done ASAP they always dial 1-800-MARINES! Semper Fi

He understands the idea that the United States is supposed to be saving the people of Iraq from an unjust leader and corrupt government, but he doesn't recall anyone asking us to be there. "But then this isn't politics," he said. "We are talking about religion."
