Epson has a good flatbed with 4x5 neg/transparency. capability. Surprisingly good. After that you are talking big bucks for a drum scanner.

I bought a Microtek at Staples for $150 that scans negatives up to 4x5. Does a pretty good job.

I would like to get a scanner that would sit right on my home network, just like a networked printer (with an HP Jet Direct card) is able to do.

I don't think anything (excepting for the obvious) should hook up to the computer, it's so early 90's!

Check out the reviews on the Epson Perfection 3200 Photo Scanner ($399 retail). It has some good reviews. After the quality/speed of this scanner - prices really jump up.
