Pittsburghers might talk funny, but they're well-read.
In fact, the abundance of bookstores and libraries -- along with the amount of periodicals published here and the education levels of residents -- add up to make Pittsburgh one of the most literate big cities in America, according to a new study.

What? No mention of the anarchist bookshops on the So'Side? Yunz'd think that Squirrel Hill is the only neighborhood in Pixburgh, an' 'at.

There used to be a great communist book store, mascarading as a Thomas Merton learning Center in Garfield. It had a huge portrait of Lenin.
It's closed now.
I bought a first edition Wizard of Oz there for $2.
The Pathfinder Store (anarchists) used to be in Garfield too until it moved. I bought Malcom X's biography there.
I don't know much but I know Pgh (and surrounding area) bookstores.

Pgh does have excellent book stores in almost all the neighborhoods (well, not Allentown or Monroeville) and great bagels and coffee in Shady Side and Squirrel Hill.

You're right. But the (geez haven't lived in PGH for years) Mc-something sisters have a great grocery there and on Sawmill Run, as well.

Anarchist bookshops we may have, but we've got nice used bookstores too. I have three within twenty minutes of my home!

McGuinness Sisters? Great produce and meats!
To: mountaineer
That's it! Thanks! They have the best selction of salads and cheeses of any city I have ever lived in! And excellent meat (ask and you can get a 2 1/2 thick Porterhouse steak cut to order) as well as terrific produce.
I bought my first fresh turkey there a few Thanksgivings ago.
