French noticeable [sic] absent from Bastille Day festivities

July 14, 2003, 2:40 AM EDT

"I don't think I've seen any French people at all," said Joe Becker, 89, while attending an Orchard Street Bastille Day party.

Remember that a donation doesn't have to be large to be significant.

There are tens of thousands of FReepers. If everyone would donate just $1.00 a month, we would never have to have another of these FReepathons.

Why would they care? Bastille Day celebrates a FIGHT for FREEDOM. Also, recognizing its significance would require a fundamental understanding of history by a nation which seems determined to keep repeating it.

It's not exactly the Fourth of July. As I recall, a crazed mob stormed the Bastille and found, inside, three prisoners, one of whom was the Marquis de Sade. The French Revolution was a sad perversion of the American Revolution, and Europe has suffered for it ever since.

I agree. Bastille Day was an marxist riot that paved the way for the Reign of Terror. The King was a loser, but the rabble that took over after the "revolution" were even worse.
