A Notice On The Sidebars

Hi all.

Occasionally, we will get abuse reports telling us that a particular article belongs in a particular sidebar, and we will go to the article and find that it already has that topic listed. Why do we get such complaints then?

I believe that this is tied to a particular aspect of the forum software. Any topic can be made into a sidebar for a user's account. When accounts are set up, there is a default set of sidebars configured, but as detailed on that thread, they can be changed, reordered, have the number of articles in the sidebar specified, and so forth.

However, consider an article posted to five topics. It may very well be applicable to each of these topics. But what if a user has a few of those topics set up as sidebars? It would not be very useful to have that article show up in that user's sidebar multiple times (one for each topic). So the software only shows any article in a sidebar once for a given user.

Take this as an example. Let's say you post an article, and specify as topics extended, activism, and fr, and you have all three of these topics set up as sidebars. You then load the latest articles page, and you do not see the article in the activism sidebar. Why? Because the system may be displaying it to you with the article in the fr sidebar, or the extended sidebar. But for a user who only has activism set up as a sidebar, the article will show up in the activism sidebar. Which sidebar will get an article when there are several possibilities is not something you have control over.

Before hitting abuse to ask for an article to be added to a topic, please check to see if the article is already in that topic. Thanks, AM
