Posted:7/13/2003 9:28:40 PM Modified:7/14/2003 7:34:53 AM Dead Body Found Under Motel Bed Kansas City, MO -- People check out of motels everyday but not usually because they smell a dead body. But, police say it happened Sunday morning. A customer checked out of the Capri Motel on Independence Avenue after he complained numerous times of a foul odor. Police say the Motel's cleaning crew discovered the body of an adult male underneath the bed. Authorities believe the man had been there since at least Thursday. That's when the customer checked in and started complaining about the odor. The beds at the Capri Motel have wood paneling. Detectives say that may helped hide the body for several days. Police say they know who the man is but would not release the name until they were notify the next of kin.

Police say the Motel's cleaning crew discovered the body of an adult male underneath the bed. Great cleaning crew. They clean the rooms every few days or so whether they need it or not, and only because of the foul oder this time.
To: jmq
I can't believe that the cleaning crew didn't bring this up. A dead body that has been sitting around for a few days smells awful, nothing else like it in the world.

The beds at the Capri Motel have wood paneling. Do they mean that the beds were set on a platform? Most modern hotels/motels are appointed that way now. If so, the perp must have removed the mattress and spring and HIDDEN the body inside the box that supports the mattress. etc. Sounds like there was a little carpentry needed! That still doesn't explain housekeeping overlooking the odor...

Has anyone seen the movie Four Rooms? There was a substory similar to this that was pretty funny.

Man's Body Found Stuffed Under Motel BedGuest Complained To Management About Smell
POSTED: 7:53 a.m. CDT July 14, 2003
UPDATED: 7:57 a.m. CDT July 14, 2003
KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- A man's body was discovered stuffed under a mattress at a local motel Sunday.
Police said that the man appeared to have been dead for some time, but the body went unnoticed until a guest staying the room could no longer tolerate the smell.
Officers were called to the Capri Motel in the 1400 block of Independence Avenue around noon Sunday after cleaning crews made the grisly discovery.
"I asked them what was going on and they said they found a body in one of the rooms," said Dennis Shultz, a guest at the motel. KMBC's Emily Aylward reported that the man who checked into the motel room a few days ago complained to management about the odor two times over the three days. He then checked out on Sunday because he could not tolerate the smell.
Police said that the cleaning staff lifted up the mattress in the room and found the body. Detectives said that the body was in an advanced stage of decomposition and had apparently been there for several days.
"If you say someone is dead for a few days, how could someone staying there not tell or smell or know something was wrong?" Shultz said.
Police suspect that the wooden panels on the side of the bed prevented someone from discovering the body earlier.

The question is whether one checks out of a motel or checks out in a motel.

This used to be an urban legend. This was also in the Tim Roth film, "Four Rooms". Reality is indeed stranger than fiction...

I saw this story on KC TV news last evening. What a wonderful place the Capri must be--surprised we haven't heard about it earlier...

Actually the smell mixes into everything and if you're in a closed room, I can see how it can be difficult to pinpoint the exact location. However, they must have noticed that it was coming from the bed or they might still be trying to figure out what it is. :)

I guess the Febreze wasn't up to the job!!
I have to imagine that the smell was horrendous. Something as small as a dead mouse in the wall is nasty, but a whole dead guy? It must have been overpowering!! Of course, if the occupant pumped gasoline for a while, that would do a job on your nose........
