If not for blogs, Howell Raines might still be editor of The New York Times; Trent Lott might still be majority leader of the U.S. Senate. And we might never have learned the name of "whatshername," Blue-Dress Girl, Lewinsky.

OK, maybe not. Raines and Lott would have left anyway, and Lewinsky was inevitable, but their stories might have evolved at a slower pace. A human rather than a technology-driven pace. For such is the gift, the curse and the essence of the blogosphere. Speed. "Instaneity," a word I just made up because we need it. News in a pixel instant because New York minutes have gotten too slow.

In the end, a blog is just a blog, but a newspaper -cradled caffeinated in a morning lap curled barefoot into the seat of a porch rocker -is a read.

A read of what? Biased Half truths and omitted stories? Who needs to pay for that.

I would imagine most people would want the rest of the story-something the internet provides.

Can the internet be biased and tell half truths?

I agree.

I don't have a porch or a porch rocker. It's
Sunday morning, my kid's home for the weekend
with some college friend s. There's quiet snoring
throughout the house, so I'm here at the kitchen
table, checking out Sluggy Freelance, FR, etc.
Someone's on the couch, so I have to give up
the Sunday morning news programs.

Since the local paper is the obominable Newar Star-Ledger,
the laptop is my read.

Depending on my mode, I get the read I'm looking for,
not what some editor want's me to read.

And even if you did have one, you wouldn't be sitting out there in the winter reading a newspaper.

I think the author is longing for the good old days, before most people were aware of the deception in the newspapers and the omissions of news that didn't bolster their attitudes and agendas.

The good old days when an answer from the newspaper,to a letter to the Editor, could be crafted by a staff over time to get the last word in on the subject, if you were so bold as to challenge them. - tom
