Lynn suggests that the American restaurant industry begin a campaign to inform people about the basics of leaving a tip. He urges the use of advertisements, educational pamphlets, and even putting tipping information on menus. And Lynn suggests that restaurants could introduce a game in which dining parties would have to tip at least 15 percent in order to be eligible to win a contest.

Ooo, wait, I have a better idea... waiters should stop assuming they are entitled to a 15-20% tip and remember that patrons aren't legally required to leave them a bloody dime! How's that?!

I worked as a waiter for 5 years... my $2.13 hourly wage wasn't really enough to get me by... so yeah... you are not "required by law" but no tips = no money for the server... And a lot of people do have your mentality, weather the service was good or poor...

Many restaurant patrons grunting at the trough should themselves realize that apart from tips, waiters & waitresses are pulling in $2 or $3 per hour at most - yet their earnings are taxed at minimum wage on the assumption that thankless patrons are leaving 15% tips (which ain't necessarily so).

There are a lot of polite customs in this society that are not legally required. I am a very good tipper, especially at my regular places.

Sister, I'm with you! My going-in position is that the wait staff ain't getting a damn nickle.

Excellent service, treating my kid like a human being, not snorting off in a huff when I decline the invitation for coctails... these go a long way towards the waiter EARNING a tip.

If service is good, I'll tip very generously... sometimes 30% or more. If it's not, I have no guilt at all about leaving absolutely nothing.

By the way, I'm not black. I'm a honky that's fed up.

Were you by any chance a character in Reservoir Dogs?

I went into a mom and pop type restaurant that required the customers to place their orders at the counter, wait for the order, and then take their own order to the table of choice. The owners had a tip jar on the counter. I stood their thinking "they want me to pay for my order and tip them for taking it?".

Oooo I have an even better idea. How about restaurants paying their waiters and waitresses at least minimum wage instead of assuming that people will tip 15% and count that as part of their earnings? Of course, the food will be more expensive to those who don't tip, and cheaper for those who tip heavily. But that's one way to get rid of people who don't understand that tips are part of wages.

Have you ever heard stories of the unappetizing things put into the dinners of patrons such as you?

I wonder what inadvertent culinary adventures you have been upon?

legally you arent required to leave a tip... but we are required to claim a certain percentage of you meal as a tip or we get fined. Sure, let's get rid of tips, but first let's make our employers pay us more...
