A VIEW TO A CHILL: Councilman member of supremacy group

DAVE SOMMERS , Staff Writer 07/11/2003
.

HOPEWELL BOROUGH -- For 12 months, he has been a member of the National Alliance, a white supremacist group, which -- in addition to its disdain of illegal immigration -- also hates Jews.

Now, Marc Moran is also the newest member of Hopewell Borough Council thanks to his five colleagues, who at the request of the mayor, unanimously appointed him to the position last week to temporarily fill a vacancy that opened up just last month.

Actually, Mayor David Nettles said he and other town officials knew little about Moran’s purportedly xenophobic views, and would likely have done things differently if they did.

"This is appalling ... that these are his views," Nettles said yesterday just hours after he was told by phone that Moran had authored numerous Internet articles, some of which characterized Hanukkah as a Jewish holiday that celebrates "murder and destruction" and the stealing of "booty."

Nettles, in hindsight, blamed the "quick" selection of Moran on the borough’s desire to have a full council board so there would be a legal quorum present during various sub-committees.

Moran will now remain in office until at least election day in November when he will likely face a write-in challenge from at least four people who yesterday told town officials they plan to issue challenges.

"I submitted Mr. Moran’s name (for appointment) initially because he was the only person running on the ballot this November," explained Nettles,
a Democrat.

Also, Moran won the June primary running as an unopposed GOP candidate, Nettles added.

"Obviously no one took the trouble to do a Google search on the Internet so we could take a look at his views," the mayor added.

"Clearly, it was a mistake."

When apprised of the turmoil, Moran, a data processor who years ago worked as a stand-up comedian in Philadelphia and New York, said no one ever asked him his views before he was appointed to office.

He also called the National Alliance a patriotic, pro-family organization, even though he insisted he doesn’t agree with all views portrayed on its website.

"I’m mainly interested in two things, illegal immigration and constitutional rights such as freedom of speech," he said.

"I also belong to the National Rifle Association, the Presbyterian Church and the American Legion, and I don’t agree with everything they stand for either," he said.

When asked if he understands why others consider him to be a racist, Moran said he doesn’t concern himself with the "politics."

"I am not an expert on social issues. But like every American, I feel it’s my fundamental right to express those views in whatever form I feel comfortable," he said.

"I just never thought my opinions would come up when, as a Hopewell councilman, I’m called on to make decisions about issues such as shade trees or zoning," he offered.

"By law, I don’t think (my views) is a disqualifier to be in office. What does my opinion on immigration have to do with any decisions in Hopewell Borough?"

The National Alliance website urges members to do whatever is necessary to achieve white living space and to keep it white.

"We must have white schools, white residential neighborhoods, white recreation areas, white farms, and white countryside," the Web site states.

In another Internet essay, posted on the Web address, vanguardnewsnetwork.com, on June 24, Moran purportedly said he supported former grand dragon of the Ku Klux Klan, Chester Doles, as a man who was wronged by the federal government because of his political views, particularly those on illegal immigration.

According to the Hopewell Valley News, Moran was previously listed as one of its staple of writers, even though his name was apparently removed in the past few days.

The slogan, "No Jews. Just Right," is posted at the top of the VNN website.

In another Internet article Moran reportedly urges parents to "take your children out of schools that would teach them that the problem instead of the solution ... point your own finger at the homosexual, the feminist and the illegal immigrant and the Jew ... who think they can call the shots."

When asked about writings attributed to him, Moran said he does not just write about immigration, but also about other subjects such as history, archeology, travel or "whatever captures my attention at the time."

"I’ve been a writer all my life," Moran said. "I wrote comedy for TV shows and I wrote articles for campus magazines," he said.

He also claimed he was unaware he was listed as a writer for National Alliance, and insisted he hasn’t written any disparaging issues about Jewish or racial issues because they "don’t draw my interest."

Moran, who was born and raised in Hopewell, said he served in the military in the U.S. Army’s 82nd Airborne Division, and continues to support veterans groups.

He also said it wasn’t him who approached town officials looking to become a councilman.

On the contrary, the mayor and other local party officials sought out him because they considered him an upstanding member of the community, he said.

He is also a member of the Sons of the American Revolution, with a relative, Levi Vorhees, who served in the Continental army, he said.

I searched the aforementioned websites and they have cleansed themselves of Marc Moran.

Hopewell, NJ is a fast growing suburban area between Princeton and Trenton with lots of McMansions going up where farms used to be.

Why is it a hit job? Either he's a member of the National Alliance or he isn't--and he says he is.

Too much is fuzzy in the story. He repeatedly states that he doesn't believe in all of the views of the various organizations he is a member of, yet the reporter doesn;t bother to define this better.

The story smacks of "So mr. soandso. Are you still beating your wife?"

I am a member of FR. Yet I certainly do not believe in everything that is posted here. Do you?

A lot of W. supporters state that they don;t like everything he does, yet they support him. How about it?

"I also belong to the National Rifle Association, the Presbyterian Church and the American Legion, and I don’t agree with everything they stand for either," he said.

Well, I suppose one could belong to the NRA and be for hand gun control and a ban on assault weapons, too.

Although I don't agree with at least some of what he stands for, I do agree with his statement that holding these views does not disqualify him from running for and holding political office. Sounds like the voters will have their chance to voice their opinion in November and I'm sure he will have plenty of opportunity between now and then to express his views.

Not shocked. As I said before, I was a card carrying member of the Democratic Women's Organization, and I know full well that racism is rampant and accepted in the party.

I agree. After all, David Duke did hold elective office and ran and lost for a number more. And with four more people in the race, there's no lack of opponents for him.

It's not a hit job.

Do a google search for Marc Moran. You'll notice you find his stuff in connection with Stormfront, Vanguard News Network and other nazi outlets such as Bill White's "Overthrow". You may find that when you click on the google hits, you get an empty page or a 404. Then click on the google cache.

Nice things, caches. Can ruin a nazi's whole day, or his entire life ;).

Well done, too. He has too much sh*t around the web for them to get around to clean up everything. Just an example:

"Yet I certainly do not believe in everything that is posted here. Do you?"

No, I do not. However, unless I was spending most of my time here disagreeing with everyone, it would be reasonable to assume that I agree with a considerable amount of what is discussed here and that I agree to a considerable degree with the stated goals of this website.

As a matter of fact, I think it would be unreasonable to assume otherwise.

I have little sympathy for those who align themselves with the White Power crowd and then try to say "I don't agree with all of it" and "it's unfair to paint all of us with one brush".

And this guy in specific is full of it. Compare:

He also claimed he was unaware he was listed as a writer for National Alliance, and insisted he hasn’t written any disparaging issues about Jewish... issues because they "don’t draw my interest."

He's earned the scorn he is getting.

Here's snippets from one of his essays.  The use of "ZOG" might be one tip-off.

The Sound of Chains

by Marc Moran

November 26, 2002

<snip>

Another factor that has caught my attention has been the treatment of the National Alliance by the media. Other than the KKK I cannot think of group that has suffered more slander and outrage in the media than the National Alliance. Every press release makes mention of either the Turner Diaries serving as a blueprint for the Oklahoma City Bombing, or the claim that the National Alliance is a "hate group."

No one ever mentions that Timothy McVeigh was carrying a copy of the Bill of Rights in his pocket, or the fact that the Muslim terrorists who flew our planes into our buildings were carrying copies of the Koran, because both of those facts would indicate that diversity is our greatest weakness and that American patriots have been charged by the founders to change their government when it no longer functions in the interests of the people. Those are facts, not allegations, but your government and those who control it do not want you to know them. They would prefer that you be frightened and intimidated into helpless acquiescence as the Deputy District Attorney in Orange County indicated when he said this week, of the arrest of the woman in charge of the Aryan Baby Drive, "And I hope it would have a chilling effect on those who are on the fence regarding whether to throw their allegiance to racist causes."

<snip>

Years ago when I was in fifth grade we were required to select someone from the War for American Independence, or the Revolution to those who were brought up with the indoctrination of public schools, and to memorize a passage that he had written and recite it to the class. I picked Patrick Henry's address to the Virginia House of Burgesses on March 23, 1775, known to many as the speech famous for the line, "Give me liberty or give me death." There is however a passage that I have never forgotten and which I am certain our own government would wish was outlawed and may one day be. It follows:

They tell us, sir, that we are weak; unable to cope with so formidable an adversary. But when shall we be stronger? Will it be the next week, or the next year? Will it be when we are totally disarmed, and when a British guard shall be stationed in every house? Shall we gather strength by irresolution and inaction? Shall we acquire the means of effectual resistance by lying supinely on our backs and hugging the delusive phantom of hope, until our enemies shall have bound us hand and foot? Sir, we are not weak if we make a proper use of those means which the God of nature hath placed in our power. The millions of people, armed in the holy cause of liberty, and in such a country as that which we possess, are invincible by any force which our enemy can send against us. Besides, sir, we shall not fight our battles alone. There is a just God who presides over the destinies of nations, and who will raise up friends to fight our battles for us. The battle, sir, is not to the strong alone; it is to the vigilant, the active, the brave. Besides, sir, we have no election. If we were base enough to desire it, it is now too late to retire from the contest. There is no retreat but in submission and slavery! Our chains are forged! Their clanking may be heard on the plains of Boston! The war is inevitable -- and let it come! I repeat it, sir, let it come.

Substitute ZOG for Britain and Lewiston for Boston and you have an identical situation, today, in our own country.

White supremacist advocate gets post

Friday, July 11, 2003

By LISA CORYELL and KEVIN SHEA

HOPEWELL BOROUGH - The borough has filled an unexpired seat on its council with Marc Moran, a 43-year-old engineer who proudly admits he's a member of a national white supremacist group and has published essays denouncing cultural diversity, mixed-race couples, homosexuals, Jews and feminists.

Moran, appointed Monday night [by a Democrat Mayor, hello Star Ledger], is a member of the National Alliance, a West Virginia-based organization that advocates having a place to live without nonwhites, an Aryan society and a government that serves the white race and is free from non-Aryan influence.

He said his association with the group will not affect his job as a borough councilman.

"Councilmen make decisions on shade tree placements and whether we have a fireworks display," Moran said.

"In a way, I'm surprised anybody asked me about my larger views on national politics or social issues. I don't see how it has any impact whatsoever on representing the people of Hopewell."

According to the 2000 Census, the borough has 1,942 white residents, 47 Hispanic residents, 22 black residents and 71 Asian and other residents.

His fellow council members, who say they had no idea of his ideologies when they appointed him, have no plans to seek his resignation.

"If the citizens of this town find his statements so reprehensible, they can come forward and ask this guy to resign, but I'm certainly not going to push him," said Councilman Charles "Sky" Morehouse.

"His is one voice on a strong council. . . . I don't think the borough will be damaged by his views. If anything, I think it will end up catalyzing conversation and debate."

Moran plans to run for election to the council in November.

Charles "Shai" Goldstein, New Jersey regional director of the Anti-Defamation League, said his office has been familiar with Moran for years and called him "New Jersey's answer to David Duke."

"He's a major leading activist with the National Alliance here in New Jersey," Goldstein said. "We were not aware of his becoming a (public) official."

Moran has climbed the New Jersey Alliance's leadership ladder and has national contacts, he said.

"He's made himself a public figure and an active writer, and his bigoted views have been well publicized on the Internet through the National Alliance, aligned Web sites and letters to newspapers," Goldstein said.

-- -- --

Moran has published several pieces on the National Alliance's Web sites, including one where he laments being afraid to speak his mind for fear of what others would think of him.

"For years I have held my tongue each and every time I have observed a mixed-race couple walk down the street," Moran wrote. "I have ignored the immigrants who set up shop in my little town, adding pornography to the bread and milk that were once the staples at the corner grocery when Whites ran it.

"I have closed my eyes to the fact that the mission statement of our public school was changed from `To teach our children the importance of understanding the history of our Nation and the accomplishments of our founding fathers' to `Promote a culture of respect which values diversity.' I have ignored a thousand other insults and abuses that take place as a matter of course these days."

Maria Jones, president of the Trenton branch of the NAACP, expressed deep concern over news of Moran's appointment.

"What does that tell you about the people who are living there, allowing someone like that . . . to serve? Someone who makes no attempt to hide his involvement with a racist organization."

-- -- --

David Nettles, Hopewell Borough mayor [a Democrat, hello Star Ledger], said residents flooded his home with phone calls after a story about Moran's National Alliance connections ran in a local newspaper yesterday.

"Trust me, people are screaming and yelling," Nettles said. "People are not happy."

Elected officials in neighboring Pennington and Hopewell Township have called for Moran's resignation.

"If he were on our council I'd be yelling up and down for him to step down," said Robert DiFalco, Pennington Borough Council president. "It puts Hopewell Borough in a very bad light. How can you have someone representing your citizens when he has those thoughts in his head?"

"I find it appalling," said Marylou Ferrara, deputy mayor of Hopewell Township. "The people of Hopewell Borough deserve better. I'll join any call for his resignation."

But Hopewell Borough elected officials said they are not overly concerned with Moran's political views.

"My interest is incredibly narrow," said Councilman David Knights. "What's most important is that he's willing to work for the borough. There's a shortage of volunteers in this town, that's the bottom line. If he's willing to serve, he won't get any trouble out of me."

Moran is running unopposed this fall, but officials said residents are free to launch a write-in campaign to unseat him.

Moran vehemently denied being a racist and an anti-Semite, but his writings suggest otherwise.

"Take your children out of the schools that would teach them that they are the problem instead of the solution," he wrote in one essay. "Stare back and point your own finger at the effrontery demonstrated by the homosexual, the feminist, the illegal immigrant, the Jew."

In another he wrote: "Wherever diverse peoples come into contact there is a sharp spike in crime, violence, discord and economic instability." And, he wrote, "Other than the (Ku Klux Klan) I cannot think of a group that has suffered more slander and outrage in the media than the National Alliance."

-- -- --

In an essay recounting a conversation with his young son about Christmas, Moran described telling the boy that "Hanukkah celebrates the misfortune of others at the hands of the Jews. They tend to celebrate their conquests of other people." Afterward Moran quizzed the child.

"Do you understand what the Jews celebrate on Hanukkah?" he asked.

"Killing people," his son replied.

Moran nodded his head in response.

In an April 2002 letter to an Alaska newspaper, Moran wrote: "The easiest part of recruiting new members for the National Alliance is not the fact that it is a `hate-group,' but rather that those who espouse ideals such as diversity and tolerance don't really mean what they say. . . . The NA is not made up of youngsters with `too much time on their hands,' but by intelligent, hardworking Americans whose sole desire is to keep this country from becoming a third world cesspool."

Goldstein disagreed.

"The National Alliance is a racist, anti-Semitic organization dedicated to destroying the American way of life, dedicated to destroying democracy," Goldstein charged. "It is the moral equivalent of being a member of the Nazi Party. Their views are virtually identical."

Not all racists are outspoken hatemongers easily identified in their communities, Goldstein said.

"Marc Moran is the face of bigotry. This is an articulate, well-spoken, physically charismatic individual who applauds the efforts of convicted felons who engage in criminal matters," he warned.

"This is why these white supremacy groups must be carefully monitored. The National Alliance is doctors, lawyers and engineers and physicists, and to underestimate this group is dangerous. . . . They need to be exposed, and that's what's occurred here."

Staff writer Joseph Dee contributed to this report.
