FEINGOLD-NEUMANN REMATCH? A Politics1 Exclusive: In 1998, then-Congressman Mark Neumann (R-WI) came within one-point of defeating US Senate Russ Feingold (D-WI). In March 2003, Neumann took himself out of contention by endorsing a potential GOP candidate (who in May subsequently announced she would not run). However, the conservative Neumann has apparently decided to make a rematch run against the liberal Feingold. He quietly filed his Statement of Candidacy with the FEC on June 18th. If he stays in the race, Neumann would likely face State Senate President Pro Tempore Bob Welch, wealthy businessman Tim Michels, Milwaukee County Supervisor Tim Johnson and attorney Bob Lorge in a GOP primary. While Feingold starts as a favorite, this could become one of the more hotly contested races in 2004.
TOPICS: Politics/Elections; US: Wisconsin
KEYWORDS: election; markneumann; russfeingold; senate; wisconsin
Finally, someone who can win is stepping forward to retire Russ Feingold. I hope Neumann stays in the race and causes the other Republican candidates to reconsider their bids.

I wonder whether this is legit. He signed his statement of candidacy 5/22/03, even before the candidate he supported, Margaret Farrow, said she wouldn't run. (She made that announcement June 26/27, contrary to the Politics1 assertion.)
Maybe it's just a technical declaration for the FEC folks?
I'm skeptical until I see some sort of confirmation that he actually intends to run.

Update: A Political Wire reader writes to say Neumann is actually exploring a run against Sen. Herb Kohl in 2006 who recently told WisPolitics.com he intends to run for re-eelction. From http://www.politicalwire.com
I wonder what re-eelction is? Must be some Democrat ritual.

This thread has left me confused. Has he filed officially or not ? I thought he was definitive that he was NOT going to run.

If it is '06, he's taking a considerable chance. If Kohl runs again, he has little chance of beating him despite his out-of-step views, and if Thompson runs (though I believe Tommy wants the Governorship back), he can fuhgeddaboutit.

According to Mark Belling (who Neumann occasionally fills in for) from an off-air conversation, Neumann did indeed file with the FEC. However, it is not to run in 2004; rather, it's to try to retire campaign debts from 1998. He is still considering a run against Kohl in 2006.

What he said. (above)
I agree that Neumann would have a difficult time against Kohl. Not to mention that we have at least two good current US Reps who are in good position to face him: Paul Ryan and Mark Green. But it's generally acknowledged that it would be best if Tommy left the gov field to Green & Co. and went up against Kohl.
