Computer crashed, how do I reinstall win2000?
Posted on 07/10/2003 7:19:45 AM PDT by joanil
Help! My win2000 pc crashed. It is stuck in a endless loop where it starts up, goesinto the window2000 start page and when it gets to the 'administrator'/password wincow I see that my password has vanished! Then the screen goes black and the pc again tries to start. I went into the safe mode by pressing f8 and tried to reinstal a password but it will not work with the original password. I am stumped! I have the win2000 cd and a 'magic floppy' that was given to me before my nephew moved out of state, and he is not available right now. How can I reload this win2000? I am using my web tv right now to message, but it sure is slow! Thanks!

No. Registry restore is built into WinME and WinXP, but not Win 2000.

What about scanreg /restore from the c prompt in DOS to reset the computer operating date? Your right...zeros to the drive is easy. It's installing all the software, restoring all the backups, drivers, networking, sharing & settings that is such a pain!

Yup, this site is a lifeboat for sure. In many many ways. So while I'm at it.......a big time thanks to everyone who tries to help, no matter the problem.

I hope you don't mind if I scoot in here and ask a question myself.
I have Win 98. Tried to do Critical Update. There's no place to click for Win 98. Plus it wants a password for the upgrades - which I don't have.
Did they stop servicing this version of Windows?

That's the site I've always used, but they've changed it. I can't see where I can update my version of Windows.
Surely they wouldn't withdraw support without notifying people, would they? I know they plan to, but I thought it was a bit in the future.
