Edwards resign and have Bowles appointed to succeed him and have Bowles run as an incumbent in the 2004 election? Bowles would still lose to Burr and the black Democrats in NC would be even more pissed than they were last year.

I still don't see the payoff for Edwards losing his Senate seat from the DNC.
Could Bowles be telling Edwards that he is running?

If NC has been overrun by northern immigrants from NJ, NY, PA, MD, OH, etc, what makes you think that NC won't go Democrat for senator again, regardless of the candidate? Is there evidence that conservatism is growing or shrinking in NC? Bowles did fairly well in 2002, which turned out to be a bad year for clintoids, though Bill Richardson won handily in liberal NM.
