Edwards resign and have Bowles appointed to succeed him and have Bowles run as an incumbent in the 2004 election? Bowles would still lose to Burr and the black Democrats in NC would be even more pissed than they were last year.

Don't forget that Edwards has bought a new 3+million house in Georgetown, that is now undergoing extensive (expensive) renovations. He's planning on living in DC, come hell or high water.
