Days after a deadly suicide blast which killed 14 people at a weekend rock show, Moscow was once again gripped by terrorism fears as an explosive device went off near a restaurant in downtown Moscow early today, killing an FSB state security service expert who sought to disarm it.
According to police sources cited by Interfax, a woman tried to bring a rucksack with what appeared to be an explosive device into a restaurant on Tverskaya-Yamskaya, Moscow's main thoroughfare, and tried to flee when the restaurant's security attempted to search the rucksack.
The woman was reportedly apprehended and the rucksack thrown out into the street, which the police had promptly cordoned off, sources added.
Meanwhile, ambulances and police cars rushed to the scene, and people in surrounding houses were warned not to venture out, as FSB expert teams warily examined the device wearing bullet-proof vests.
A witness at the scene told AFP that a police robot handled the device five times before the expert judged it safe to approach.
However, as soon as the expert crouched near it, the device exploded, blasting him metres away from the spot as the explosion wave smashed into a car parked nearby and shattered windows in neighbouring houses.
Police said the device contained an equivalent of two kilograms of TNT, which they said left an expert almost no chance of survival, even though wearing bullet-proof clothing.
Moscow has been on bomb alert since Saturday, when two women, one of them a Chechen, blew themselves up in a suicide attack at a Moscow rock concert, killing 14 people and injuring some 50 more.
The Russian authorities have blamed the attack on rebels from the breakaway republic of Chechnya.
However, so far the rebels have denied involvement in what proved to be the most brazen attack since 41 rebels stormed a Moscow theatre in October and held 800 people hostage in a dramatic showdown that killed 129 people.

Hmm.. I wonder if it was the large McDonald's on Pushkin Square, although they'd probably mention that by name if it were the case. Maybe some other Western franchise in that general vicinity. That's also close to the subway platform bombed three years ago (iirc).

Good grief, the Chechnyans are using their women as bomb carriers, but that's becoming an accepted Muslim terrorist tactic.

The poor fellow, being a bomb defuser must be among the worst of jobs.

If she didn't have her obligatory 7-8 kids first some other muslim woman will have to take up the slack. Seriously, using women of childbearing age in battle has to be the most stupidly Darwinistic tactic around.

The Chechens made a big mistake this time: they were targetting young people. I know a young immigrant from Russia who had been reluctant to fight there in the 1990s. Morale among the young troops has been said to be terrible. That was before they were targeted.
I think the rock concert bombing is going to live in infamy among the Russian youth. They will always remember that the Islamist animals wanted to explode a shrapnel bomb among 40,000 of them.

Are they going to bring the death penalty back in Russia?

The technology exists to perform robotic surgery, from an operator outside the OR. I wonder if this technology is being applied to bomb disposal? I wonder if the Russians could afford it? That poor guy. I don't know how they get people to do jobs like that

They should have just cleared the area, use the robot to pick it up and set it into a metal blast deflector (up is good), set an initiating charge next to it and demo it. It pains me to see a human have to give up their life to protect citizens from these scumbag terrorists. God bless his soul.

We aren't told her age, but she is now in Russian custody, which probably isn't too pleasant after the death of the bomb specialist. But the Muslims are doing a very good "job" of out-breeding everyone else. We don't know if this rucksack woman had done her duty, and dropped 7 or 8 hopeless kids before trying to assassinate innocent people at a restuarant. We can hope she is barren and that's why they sent her. We can also hope and trust in the Darwinian stupidity of these primitive Muslims.

Duma wants but Putton veto. Why? He wants EU to like Russia. Screw EU. They criticize anyway, why? Because they not able to compete with Russia so they jealous...but they need Russia for gas/oil and investment outside own super tax land.

I know several EOD type peoples they are nuts, all of them. They like life on edge. As for Islamics....ok, so shoot wives too when shoot terrorists....no problem, need few more bullets. Chechins war self into extinction...already 20% less of 900,000 peoples race. My children will read of extinct Chechin peoples.

The poor fellow, being a bomb defuser must be among the worst of jobs. The joke we used to tell is that it's a great job. If you screw up, no one chews you out. (I worked fire/rescue, so we can make those jokes)

Islam attack against Russians is stupid Darwanistic trait. While Russians Christian and try to act civilized, vaneer thin and getting thinner...soon many fewer Chechins...maybe Russian Cossak settle region soon?
To: xJones
No not true...only some Muslims out breed....most Muslims in Russia have low brith rate....Chechins too....that why now 20% less Chechins (out of less 1,000,000 and counting).

Probably radio detonated by a second terrorist. The second terrorist didn't set it off until there was a person to kill.
