Did any of these people notice that everyone in the orient has soy in one form or another in every meal for their entire lives?

I don't think a little soy sauce is enough to hurt you, but eating big chunks of soy as a meat substitute is probably not great.

If you cook it right, it's not bad (marinate it like it's a piece of meat, and throw it on the barbecue--yes, I realize this is heresy, I don't actually practice it myself, but I've seen it done and I've tasted it)

As someone who has thyroid disease, I have known to stay away from soy for some time now.

Good point about the fact that Japanese have been eating lots of soy for a long time, HOWEVER it's important to remember that their diets are also pretty high in animal-based proteins, such as seafood and poultry. I don't take this article to mean that you can't have soy sauce and tofu (that's a pretty obviously stupid conclusion of another poster), but I DO take it to mean that those folks who are substituting ALL of their animal and dairy protein with soy (which the Japanese do not and have never done -- vegetarians they ain't)are running a risk. That's why I stick to the good ol' fashioned foods God gives us, in balance -- meat, dairy, fruits, veggies, some sweets, and some carbs. That (and God's generous blessings!) is why I'm healthy, am on no medications, and still wear pretty much the same size clothes (about size 4) at age 46, as I wore when I was a svelte and silly teenager. Swimming a mile every morning doesn't hurt, either! ;^) -- Svelte and silly middle age!! EEEEEKK!!

Only since Commodore Perry. Until that time Japan below the level of the nobility was essentially Bhuddist and vegetarian.

Yep. My wife eats tons of the stuff. I have it in miso soup sometimes, but not everyday. Grilled and topped with tuna shavings and soy sauce is pretty good.

Correct. If they had flesh it was usually fish and not often.

Did they eat eggs? Or is that forbidden Buddhistic (is that a word??) vegetarianism? And dairy -- did they do dairy? Probably not, as Asians are more likely to be lactose intolerant.

I still think the rush to substitute soy for all forms of animal protein is about as smart as was the rush to abandon eggs because of high cholesterol, which of course later they found out was not nearly as correct as they'd thought. It didn't surprise me or stop me from eating eggs. My great grandma lived to be 94, sharp as a tack the whole time, and she had eggs (plural) nearly every day and plenty of bacon, too. Most of her descendents have led equally healthy lives. But she was a real stickler for eating balanced meals, and moderate portions, which has been passed down generation to generation.

THAT's the key, I expect. But we live in a society that absolutely can't handle the concept of moderation, it seems -- it's either all or nothing at all. People just love to deny themselves things and feel saintly about it. They either feel guilty for eating something, or deprived for not eating it. What a way to live.
